    Shifter... What did I buy?!

I have never had a Mr gasket shifter but it looks pretty close to a Hurst. I would have to mount it up just to see how well or bad they worked. I would say that is pretty old and you probably could make a few bucks selling it on eBay if you didn't like how it shifts. My gut tells me there is a...

    Shifter slop

If it is the shifter itself that is wore (not a loose handle) you can remove the bushing that the top mounting bolt goes thru and spin it around. This gives it a new wear surface to work on. If the shifter is excessively loose side to side. Remove a small amount from the end of this same bushing...

    linkage problem

Wish I was close enough to give ya some hands on type help. Did you get all the gears to engage without the linkage rods installed. (Flipping the levers in and out of neutral one gear at a time?)

    linkage problem

Go back to post 2. Get the trans shifting into reverse without a shifter installed. Forward gear levers need to be in neutral to get reverse to engage. Once you have all gears working without a shifter then install shifter with the centering tool. I use a drill bit. Install shift rods adjusted...

Need Help!!: Will A 1970 Truck Four Speed Fit Into an A Body?

Best answer, no. Forget about it. Of course anything can be done with a torch and welder but to many reasons to list why you shouldn't.

Won't Shift Into Gear While Running

Makes me think you may have the wrong fork pivot bracket bolted in the bellhousing. If it is at a different height or angle you would have adjustment issues. I had this happen on a lakewood that was previously used on a truck before I used it in a dart. Check fork and throw out bearing...

    Noisy vibrating shifter

If it is the linkage rods I have seen two kinds of retaining clips used. A hair pin shaped clip on many factory Mopar shifters & a circular style clip. The hair pin style will rattle and the circular Hurst clips hold the rods with spring tension to prevent the rattle. If it is the shifter...

    4-speed o/d

I believe that is a direct swap. Same style levers for the linkage rods. I like to drill & tap the truck shifters for adjustable over shift bolts before using them. Like the competition plus comes with. 5/16-24 Don't forget the jamb nuts to lock them in.

    Lakewood scattershield

Make sure to indicate bearing retainer pilot true to the crankshaft within .008 runout. Pay close attention that the starter gear returns off the flywheel ring gear after starting. Seems they always need a bit of tweaking to get the starter working right Hammer the firewall to floorpan...

833 hold up to 500hp RB

I don't consider a Borg & Beck Long pressure plate a race clutch in today's world. Although they did start out that way decades ago. It has always been my favorite clutch for a street or a vintage style race car. I myself will need nothing better for my cars until I can no longer press the...

    Slick shifted transmission

They have no longevity. Most would consider this mod to be damaging today. Face plating is better suited for the street and last much longer. Both methods are thought of as a racing mod only since they can only be shifted hard and fast once a trans has had this done to it. Built for full...

All 833s even the OD will work for you on the street if trans is in good shape. I have never broke any with street tires and always treated them very mean. You just can't get the traction to hurt them. If you do happen get a good plant the driveshaft or rear axle will give up first every...

Hurst shifter box too much play?

They do have shims between the levers that wear with lots of use. Check that the top main pivot bolt is tight. It can loosen up and make a wore shifter seem worse than it really is. Although not as correct as replacing the worn shims a person can file or grind a small amount from the end...

    Super shifter 3 mounting bracket

Its not a stock A-body bracket but it may be a bracket made for the super shifter by Hurst. Could be home built also. The super shifter has the same mounting bolt pattern as the competition plus. The brackets would have been changed in order to get the shifting rods in a straight line for...

I won't dispute the guy repaired a transmission that was on its way out in that article. But I have never seen a transmission that needs this repair myself. 833 aluminum overdrive reinforcement

Unless the transmission has been beat on hard with many many miles don't fret it. Take a look at the cluster shaft pin bore for signs of hammering. It don't hurt to look at the schyncro's also for signs of a driver that never let's go of the shifter. Most show no wear that I have picked up. I...

    4 speed ka-booom !

The ramrod reverse rod is similar to the factory reverse rod and takes its path under the cross member. It does not need to be straight or as heavy duty like the forward gear rods since you dont speed shift reverse.

    4 speed ka-booom !

Your vertigate does appear to be mounted higher (better) and more forward (not so good) than the ramrod. The e-body guys have it good with the long tail and rear mount that puts a shifter in the perfect spot. A-body guys not so lucky with their mounting made to work with the bench seats.

    4 speed ka-booom !

I did close to the same thing you are doing now with your Vertigate but I used a 1971 Hurst ramrod. Used the correct Hurst mounting bracket for the A-body. As It turns out I would have rather chosen the shifter location myself with a homemade bracket. It seems low and more forward than...

Clutch & Flywheel for my O/D upgde

Starter mounting position on bellhousing determines tooth count on flywheel needed. Correct some starters mount further away from crank center and have a higher tooth count.
