    Head Gaskets for 383

Not saying this is going to happen, but I put a 383 together with the Mopar performance steel shim gaskets, “ heads and block were NOT surfaced” used copper spray, re torqued after break in, and still had some water seepage, into cylinders and side of block.a good fresh deck and head surface...

    Mega Block Question

My uncle has ran a procharged big block in the 900 range for many many years, stock 440 block with girdle, But on the other hand an aluminum block that can take 2k+ won’t last at 1000 with a bad tune or bad machine work...

    Mega Block Question

I’m no expert but I would say the power level is going to be dependent on the tune. What are your goals power/et wise? What rotating components do you plan to use?

Break in question . burned paint?

They also needed clearanced for a 1.55 diameter spring, they hit the retainers. That was a 440 source head tho

Break in question . burned paint?

Keep a good eye on those rockers, we had a set of them on a 440 with solid cam. The roller bearings in the rockers started to dig into the shafts.

    440 missing/wont idle

    Where’s the timing at?

    Aluminum Heads

Yea the source heads on the 440 are CNC ported

    Aluminum Heads

Ran a 528 cam in an 8:1 383 with stock close chamber heads to mid 12s... As far as the heads go, the source heads definitely need springs, locks, and retainers, we have a set on a 440 with 670 solid roller, they have been great so far

    Stock main bolts?

Just remember if you go with studs instead of bolts you “should” have the mains align honed

    Stock main bolts?

My 383 has been in 2 cars with a ton of run time on stock main bolts, but a set of arp main bolts is fairly inexpensive and is always good insurance

    Was wondering about stealth heads

The stealth heads are fine, I been torturing them for a few years, recently with a solid roller cam, Buy the heads, throw the springs, locks, and retainers in the trash. Get the recommended springs for your cam, and a good set of locks/retainers and you will be happy

Wiped cam lobe = ported heads and roller

We are running the comp 829 rollers, stock block un bushed. during the build I noticed 3 of the lifter bores were uncovered at full lift causing oil leakage at those lifters during priming, this is with a crane .670 lift [email protected] cam. I was worried but talked to another member and decided to...

Hughes rockers on our solid roller, going great so far

    Some help with a 400

Wouldn’t higher compression produce more torque? But I suppose running a short duration cam that doesn’t bleed off much cylinder pressure you can’t go as high on the static side...

    1/4 mile Shift Point

Stone stock 1965 383 with intake and cam I shifted at 6200-6300 for a couple years, rebuilt motor same crank/rods but with arp rod bolts, forged pistons I shift 6800 now and it loves it

    499 roller cam ???

That cams 260/268@ .050? At 11:1 I think you will be fine. We’re at 10.5:1 with [email protected] and it runs real hard

    383 deck

Absolutely, just don’t want to get it too high if your running iron heads and a small cam

    383 deck

All parts are machined with different tolerances. So every case is possibly different, I had a 440 block decked 10 thou and the intake needed milled to fit properly. But the heads were also shaved 5 thou so that played part too, But depending on how much needs taken off it can also change...

    383 deck

Have shop check it to see how much it needs cut to clean up, might need a lite surface or could need a bunch, not saying a good gasket wouldn’t seal it but I’d hate to get it all together in the car and have it leak

    oh f*%k

The external setup is nice, I’ll agree with the stock 3/8 pickup would be fine tho

    Intakes

That’s what’s on my 383 and I believe getting harder to find.... I saw 3 or 4 at Carlisle all in the $125 range... shoulda grabbed another!

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

I agree the backfiring sounds like timing, but you say without starting fluid it hardly tries to fire... is it getting fuel?

    Hughes rockers

Seems like it runs good, hard to tell on the street... but the track doesn’t lie!

    Hughes rockers

Little update, got the motor in and all hooked up, fired right up and ran it for a while between 1800-2300 rpm ( even though they say you don’t have to with a roller) then made a couple passes down the road. A few little bugs to fix, the old blue pump finally gave up so new fuel pump is on the...

    Hughes rockers

I’m sure there is a slight edge in power/durability getting the geometry absolutely perfect. But I’m not going for prostock performance, the 383 in my Dart has been in 2 cars and tortured since 2011 with the same heads a ductile rockers... the sweep pattern on those guys about covers the entire...

    Hughes rockers

Been busy with some other stuff lately but everything is ready now, just waiting for a good day with no rain or work to get the motor in, I’m off this weekend so hopefully the weather cooperates!
