    Silly question

For those of you using the Edelbrock heads on your smallblock...any considerations with regard to head bolt kits, gaskets, rocker arm shafts or any other things that might not be mentioned in literature on these heads? In other words, are they plug 'n play as far as replacing cast iron heads...

    Cams Away!

Time to start researching a cam selection for my Duster 340. The old grind, which really enjoyed the crap out of, was as follows: Lift .450/.475 Duration 298/308 Overlap 79 deg. @.050 232/242 This thing had a gloriously lumpy idle and ran like a scalded dog. My only complaint was that with a...

    Head Games!

OK, need some of you portmasters to weigh in on my latest developments on my 340 build. I dropped off my '72 J-heads with my machinist over the weekend. He's going to: 1) clean and evaluate them 2) give me a quote/estimate on reconditioning A couple of noteworthy items...these heads came off my...

    Lifter galley paint

I read somewhere a long time ago that guys were using Rustoleum to paint their lifter galleys for better run-off of oil to return to the pan, and to keep the cam lobes oiled. Sounds like a great idea, but wondering what sort of mess it could create if the paint started flaking off and getting...

    Internal/external balancing

Does anyone know with certainty the approximate date the 340 motors switched from internal to external balance, with corresponding changes in timing mark indicators, dampers and radiators/water pumps?

    X vs J- flow differences?

Is there a difference in flow between 340 X heads and the later 2.02 J heads? If not, what are the differences between the two?

    Just wonderin'...

Been binge-watching "Graveyard Carz" for a few weeks now, and I really like the way Mark and crew install the motor/trans and K-frame with suspension...from the underneath. Of course, they have the luxury of a four point lift and can lift the car up to eyeball level. I, on the other hand, have a...

    Value of 1969 340?

I have a '69 340 motor, disassembled but complete. Wondering what the average value might be for something like this?

    Engine color

What's the deal with engine color between the various models? Most, if not all, B, RB and hemi engines appear to be Hemi Orange, but I've seen various smallblocks in orange as well. Was there a specific agenda for this? Only smallies I've seen in Chrysler Blue are some 318/340/360 versions.

    J heads upgrade

My 340 has a set of late '72 1.88 "J" heads. Would I experience any issues upgrading these to 2.02 intakes, and how much will it buy me on a HP street motor?

    Good choice for balancer?

72 340, going to be running a 69 forged crank with 4 speed. Larry Shepard recommend the Fluidamper harmonic balancer, but $500.00...YIKES! Can any recommend a little more economical performance balancer (stock pulleys and V-belts) that will stand up to an occasional flogging and 3-400HP? Thanks

    New Rod Bolts

I am considering replacing my 40-something year old rod bolts with new ARP rod bolts on this build, although there is nothing physically wrong with them. My son is trying to convince me that even after pre-torquing and checking clearances that the big ends may require align-honing due to...

A few questions for the pro engine builders out there...

How important is it to you to be 'in touch' with your customers regarding their build, from the machining to the recommendation of parts and component choices? Do you leave it up to the customer to decide what he or she wants, or try to steer them in the direction you know will work best for...

    My SB build...

Looking for input on my proposed 340 build... I had it all figured out, see...then things changed. Most of you who have read my resto thread know what I had, back in the day. This time around I was going to simply replicate it as close as I could and go from there. BUT...the heart and soul of...

    X head chambers?

Somebody posted a link once regarding the different chamber sizes (in cc's) of the various 318/340/360 head chambers but that was on the old forum and I can't find it now. Anyone have it in their memory bank?

    "Matching Numbers"...'splain to me, Lucy...

OK; I understand the part about the fender tag, and casting date, etc on the block. Bot how do we determine if a smallblock casting number actually came out of a particular car? Is there a tie-in with the fender tag? If not, how do you confirm a "matching numbers" motor to an A-body?

    Comp Cams...trouble in paradise?

My engine machine shop guy (who is building a 400 Pontiac motor for my youngest son right now) told him he refuses to install ANY Comp Cams on any engine due to over a dozen failures in the past year. He blames it on the low lobe angle cut on the hydraulics (machined to cause the lifters to...

What's considered EXCESS wear, 340 bore

FOR A PERFORMANCE BUILD....what is considered an excess amount of cylinder wear/taper before considering oversize boring? One book puts it at .006 taper/out of round. But I am referring to a street/strip PERFORMANCE build with no desired piston slap or oil burning...in other words, done right...

340 PISTONS: Between a rock and a hard place

OK; here's the deal: Due to corrosion/pitting and a CR too high for pump gas, I'm being forced to re-think my position on the old TRW L-2322 forged pistons I was using. I would like to replace them with the TRW/Sealed Power L2316F forged flat-top, but here's the kicker: they only come in +.020...

What's the highest CR you can safely run with pump gas?

This is a tough one.....and there are a jillion internet gurus who 'think' they know the answer....all based on modern technology and computer-controlled spark advance, variable vale timing, etc. But for us 'old-school A-body' guys running LA engines, what do you think is the highest...

340 deck height with L-2322 pistons?

For planning purposes (compression calculator) I am trying to determine the 'standard' deck height on a 340 block using stock forged crank and rods and TRW L-2322 pistons. I am getting some erroneous info on the 'net giving various deck heights other than zero using these pistons. Since I don't...

    Best piston for street/strip 340?

What do you guys consider the best piston (best price considered) for a street/strip 12 second 340? I have heard some negative reviews on the Keith Black Hypereutectics shattering...although some or all of this could be internet rumor. Wisecos are little bit outside my tax bracket KB's..well...

    Piston dome question?

Ruh Roh. Might be trouble in River City, as Dad used to say... After cleaning up the first piston dome to the luster of a somewhat dusty jewel, I moved on to the second. All was well until I got the major nasties off and saw this: ...which at first viewing, appeared to be a crack (gakk!) and...

    Harland Sharp roller rockers...worth it?

OK, so I was looking at these online the other day. Just had a whim, sorta.... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/csp-s70015k Until I looked at the price. $689.00? Really?! Now, if these were forged steel pieces or something, I could understand. But I never had any issues with a street...

    What would YOU do?

It looks as if my 'intended' 340 build may have to change some as I may not be able to get away with running the TRW pistons I had planned on reusing (11.5:1 with cc'd 1,88 'J' heads). Pump gas ain't what it used to be. (These pistons are 12.5:1 with stock chamber bowl size, hence the cc job)...

Has anyone successfully bored a 318 to 4.04?

Has anyone successfully bored a 318 to 4.04? Or will you 'hit water' if not properly done? While 340 blocks are becoming rare to find these days, seems like a simple solution.

    Heads question

I've got two sets of heads I could use on my 340 build....the J's I was running before (which have been CC'd to lower the compression with the TRW pistons I'm planning on running) and a stock set of X heads. The J's are 1.88 intakes and I've been told the 1.88's will work fine on a street motor...

    Smallie cam question

I'll be getting to my engine build some time next year. My machine shop guy tells me that I should not reuse my cam because the lifters have rust on them. He claims that most of the cams he's seen reused with new lifters fail due to the changes in engineering and metallurgy over the years (this...
