Need some advice tuning new engine

I'm pretty much a rank amateur mechanic. But I built an engine and it runs. I couldn't have done it without the help of this forum . After the initial break in, I had a couple of oil leaks and the intake wasn't sealed correctly. I fixed this stuff and now I need some help to dial it...

New some advice in tuning my new engine

D'oh, can't edit the title, see other post please. Is there a way to delete a post?

    Hood clearance/air cleaner

67 Barracuda, 408 stroker, Edelbrock Air Gap intake. I just switched from a Holley to an Edelbrock carb. The Edelbrock has an electric choke and the fuel inlet is at the top of the carb, so the drop type air cleaner I had (14" diameter, 3" tall filter element) won't fit. It hits on the choke...

    Rev limiter on FBO ignition?

I have a "stockish" FBO ignition system on my 408 (chrome box, stock but recurved dist, ballast resistor). Is there a rev limiter I can use with this? I've never used a rev limiter before, but this car gets up there in a hurry. I tried calling FBO a couple of times and no answer and no...

Anbody have problems with Hughes rockers loosening?

I probably only have about 45 minutes run time on my newly completed engine, sounded pretty peppy. I just got the exhaust system on yesterday and heard some clicking and popping. (Before it was open headers). Anyway, I pulled the valve covers and one of the adjustment bolts for the Hughes...

    Starter too close to headers?

My TTI headers touch my mini starter. Do others have this problem? Will my starter fry? Obviously the rubber cover on the bolts will melt if I don't remove them. What have you done to fix this?

    Question about MP valve covers

Stock height Mopar Performance valve covers. I know a lot of you have these. Has anybody had any issues with clearance with roller rockers? I have the Hughes roller rockers. Also, do they come with a baffle kit or something, because according to Summit (in the product description) they do...

Installation of TTI headers advice request

408 SB in 67 Barracuda. I got the engine broken in with the stock manifolds and now I am going to install my TTI headers. Is there any way to get these in without pulling the engine? Will I need to pull the steering column or steering box? (power steering) Any hints or advice is...

    New engine wouldn't start

408 SB. New engine I finally got it all together, and went to start it for the first time. Definitely have fuel, and I must have spark since it backfired and flames were coming from the carb. It almost starts, but won't. It seems like a timing issue. I put it at TDC by feeling the air...

Fill block with water before starting?

I was wondering if I should fill the block with water/antifreeze before starting it. It is a new engine. This is my first build and I am about to break in the engine. Or, will it fill OK just by filling the radiator? Or, should I take out the thermostat?

Oil leaks out of oil filter plate

I am just about ready to start my engine for the first time. I primed the oil pump with one of those oil primer rods and a drill. I had an oil pressure gauge and went to about 60 psi. There was a big puddle of oil under the rear of the engine. I thought the rear main seal was bad, but it...

    Dist too high? Wiper motor

I just installed my engine a couple of days ago. My distributor seems to be a bit high. A couple of the plug wires will be crammed against the wiper motor, if I can get them in at all. Anybody else come across this problem? Any easy solutions? I won't be driving this in the rain a whole...

Did I install my engine wrong?

OK, my first time installing a small block, so I'm a little ignorant. Did I put the motor mounts on the wrong side of the ears? D'oh! It seems a little too far back and the trans mount is too far back by about the width of the ears.

Mechanical vs Vacuum Secondaries for this build

    Lenths for custom plug wires?

I am going to order either Magnecor or Firecore plug wires for my new engine. I was wondering if stock wires fit OK, or if I should order custom lengths. I would imagine somebody out there has stock wires and wished they had different lengths? Or already knew and got the right sizes? Any...

    Problem with oil pan gasket?

I have the FelPro 1807 oil pan gasket (LA 360). The rear seal appears too long. Is this fine, or should I use a different kind? Any suggestions? As you can see by the photo, it has a wrinkle when it is seated at the base. It seems to me that when I put the oil pan on, there will be a...

Oil pump hits new ARP main bolts

I went to bolt on the oil pump in my new long block. I used new ARP main bolts. I guess the heads on the ARPs are thicker than the stock bolts. As you can see from the pic (upper right), the oil pump won't bolt down because the ARP bolt hits the oil pump housing. The oil pump is an OEM type...

What oil for my new engine

Not quite finshed, but close. My freind at NAPA says the Valvoline Racing oils are on sale. Thought I might get some. Do i just get 10-30 VR-1? Should I go synthetic, which (I think) is the Valvoline "not legal for the street" 10-30? For the break in (my first), do I run regular type...

Difference between Air-gap and RPM Performer

I'm curious what the difference is between the Edelbock RPM Air-Gap (7576) and the Edelbrock Performer RPM (7176). They are both dual plane rated at 1,500-6,500 rpms. Which one is better for my build, and, is one taller than the other with the potential to not be able to close my hood? 1967...

Fuel pump for stroker 408 (carbs also?)

My engine build is coming together thanks to you all. I need a fuel pump. I would like to run a mechanical fuel pump. The engine will be a 408 10.3 CR, Edelbrock heads, Air gap intake, Hughes 232/237 @ .50 dur 540/548 lift cam, tti headers. Haven't picked a carb yet. Would a stock type...

    Cam card specs meaning

I'm looking at cam cards trying to chose a cam, the intake exhaust opening/closing numbers are printed there and I was wondering what they tell you about the cam. The Lunati and the Hughes have similar numbers. The Comp Cam, although similar duration, the intake/exhaust opening and closing...

    Deep oil pan?

About where (HP, torque) do you need a deep sump oil pan? My engine is going to be stroker 360 with Edelbrock heads. It needs an oil pan (the block core came from a truck). It is going into a 67 Barracuda. I changed the K-frame and suspension, brakes, centerlink, steering, to 73+ parts...

Compession ratio and my planned engine

Here is the plan for my motor. I used the KB pistons compression ratio (CR) table, but most are about the same. According to the CR table, and depending on what size the combustion chambers in the Edelbrock heads are (63-65cc), the CR should be somewhere between 10.2 and 10.5. Is this CR...

Anybody use a fluid filled damper?

    Help me build my 360!

OK, where to start. I haven't ever gone to this extent on an engine. I've had them apart, but never to the point where I removed the pistons/crank and replaced them. I have an 85 (84?) 360. I want to build a nice street engine that will be bracket racing on occasion. Needs to run on pump...

How to make stroker 360 with 273 crank?

I talked to a guy who is selling an engine. He said that he has an internally balanced 360 stroker using a 273 crank. How do you get a stroker 360 with a 273 crank? Please pardon my ignorance. I am new to the small block. BTW, the basic specs for the engine are 9.5:1 CR, aprox [email protected] and...
