Factory Power Brake Fun (not really)

I noticed awhile ago when I pressed the power brake pedal on the '65 Formula S that the idle speed would change. Then I noticed the idle speed was not changing when pressing on the brake, but the idle was then rough and the power brake assist was no longer available. Took an extreme effort...

Which Aftermarket Dual Master Cylinder Kit Best for '65 Abody?

Just starting looking into the aftermarket. I thought my first "hit" would work, but "fine" print states only for converting manual brake vehicles to power/dual master cylinder (see link below). I have factory power brakes on my '65 Formula S so I need to keep looking. Any experience out there...

'65 Formula S Power Brake Booster Problem

About ten years ago I spent good money having the factory power brake booster renewed. Awhile ago I noticed diminished assist and at the same time the idle speed would change slightly when I depressed the brake pedal. Now it seems no power assist whatsoever and no change in idle speed when brake...

    Master Cylinder Autopsy

This rebuilt master cylinder was installed more than ten years ago (photo #1). Recently, I found it empty and the brake pedal going all the way to the floor (the '65 Valiant Signet convertible it belongs to had been parked and not driven for a long, long time). On the end of the piston (just...

10" Drums Aren't Cast All the Same

Follow up to my other thread: Are Brake Drums a Press Fit? "Problem" was this: while reassembling the 10" front brakes on the '65 Valiant Signet convertible it appeared the driver's side brake drum (which had separated from the hub when the left-hand lugs were changed over to right-hand lugs)...

Are Front Brake Drums a "Press" Fit"?

When changing the lug studs on the '65 Valiant Signet convertible, the drum fell off the driver's side hub. I thought I would just slide it back over and on during reassembly, but it still needs to go about another 1/4 inch or so. I first tried to tighten some lug nuts to kinda "press" it back...

    Parking Brake Not Effective

Pulling on the parking/hand brake on the '65 Valiant Signet convertible does not apply the parking brake. The handle will slide out 1 3/4" and then comes to an abrupt stop. Looking underneath at the cables while I pull on the handle, I can see the main cable from the handle is free but the...

Learned a New Brake Term Today

Looked around for hours trying to find the "anchor pin plate" that I cleaned yesterday along with the other brake hardware I removed for cleaning. Tomorrow I'll keep looking. If it really ran away from home, my local fabricator guy is more than capable of making me one more.

    "Warning" Don't Bench Bleed Me

The '65 Valiant Raybestos master cylinder has conflicting literature included. One item is a description of Method "A" and Method "B" options that may be chosen to bench bleed. The second item, is a printed red warning that states: "Do not bench bleed this master cylinder--you will damage the...

    Duralast 433 "Economy" Brake Shoes?

These rear 9X2 inch brake shoes have a little less lining material (top) than the shoes that I removed from the '65 Valiant with '75 Dart differential (bottom). Well at least the ends have been chamfered.

Before I Strip the Brake Line Fitting all to H$%$?

I always have nightmares when it comes to removing the upper end of the rear brake hoses. I have the correct flare nut wrenches and I extend them with pipes and stuff for more leverage. But once again, the smaller 3/8" fitting wants to round itself off before breaking loose. Any tips on how to...

    Brake Hose Vs Vice-Grips?

Why is it always me? We have a '65 Signet with a transplanted '74 differential. I am trying to overhaul the brakes. It appears the rear brake hose, where it connects to the distribution block on top of the rear end, has no place to place a wrench of any kind. The hose is crimped with metal band...

Front Brake Shoe Width 2.25" vs 2.56"?

Working on 10" front brakes 1965 Valiant Signet. The currently installed front brake shoes I measured are 2 1/4" wide. I found listings online for this vehicle as follows: Raybestos 332PG @ 10" x 2.25" and Autozone Duralast 169 @ 10" x 2.56". Will the wider Duralast brake shoes fit? Thank you.

Part# for 9 inch by 2 inch Rear Brake Shoes Please?

I am overhauling the brakes on a '65 Valiant Signet where someone transplanted a '74 Dodge differential. When I go to the local Autozone for brake shoes, they will be sure to ask for the year and make of the vehicle. In order to avoid any confusion, I thought maybe a forum member here could help...

    Brake Hardware from Venus/Mars?

We have a '65 Valiant with what appears to be a junkyard '74 Dart 7 1/4" open differential that was transplanted by a previous owner. The springs retaining the rear brake shoes sure look strange to me, I have never seen anything like 'em.

How To Simplify Parking Brake Cable Routing?

The '65 Formula S has been going through a three year restoration (sandblast, rotisserie, paint). Hard to find Manual Adjusting Drum Brake lower spring
