hi. Does anyone know if engine block numbers reliably indicate their year of production? Also, is there any way to reliably determine 225 vs 170 ci motors just from looking at them? Thanks.

No, but the machined pad on the block under and behind the alternator does.

The water bypass hose between the head and the water pump is approx 3 inches long on the 198 and 225 engine. It is about 1.5- 2 inches long on the 170
