Hi guys, anyone seen any comparisons between 1-5/8" and 1-3/4" headers? I have a hand made set of 1-3/4" headers on my 360 in a right hand drive Dart in Australia, and I'm trying to get my ' 69 Barracuda going. The only headers available are 1-5/8" Hookers Hedman etc without going to the mega buck TTI's.
I'm wondering if there is any performance loss in going to the smaller headers. Anyone got any thoughts or info?

Unless your building a serious racecar, I don't think using the 1 5/8" headers will hurt your performance that much. Might even help out on the bottom end. Just about any type of header will do alot better than stock manifolds.

From everything I've read 1-5/8 will do better for a small cube mill unless you are doing all out racing sao I agree with HawiiDuster.

This engine is not exactly all out, but it is fairly serious. It's a 11:1 360 with a set of mildly ported Edelbrocks, a mild hydraulic roller cam and a much modified LD 340 manifold and a big TQ. I have so much bottom end at the moment that I have a lot of traction problems, so i certainly don't need any more. My main concern is losing out on the mid range onwards from the smaller primary pipes on the headers.
    Thanks for your replies

They might work fine for what your doing then with that much motor. Sounds as if you might benefit from a little less torque and more HP.
I read a report last year or year before in Mopar Muscle (I think) where they tested several different headers. The 1-5/8 did have more low end torque than the 1-3/4. The 1-3/4 had something like 10 more HP up high if I remember right. I don't think they had as much motor as you though so yours might gain more. They also tested the TTI step headers and they were the best overall performers for a hot street engine. They seemed to be the best of both worlds.

I've checked out the TTIs and they look pretty good, the only thing I don't like about them is the number 7 pipe drops straight from the back port into the collector and it appears to be a LOT shorter than the other pipes. I have to admit I haven't seen them in the flesh only pix, but that's how it appears.
