When did Dodge start installing 383 engines in 1967 Darts? Is there any documentation or literature about the 383 being available? The standard Dart brochure does not list the 383 as an available engine.

The 67 brochure was late to the game for sure, if not existent. The manual was even later. Not sure on dates but they exist. I try to redo wiring docs in color for all three years but complete 67 stuff from the factory is hard to find for the the Dart or Barracuda. Wish I could find some good docs for accessory harnesses.

I thought only 68-69 Darts had the option to have big blocks.

I remember reading something years ago about how Mr Norm was doing the swap early in '67 to show it was feasible, then Dodge agreed and rushed it through and made it an official option. Also I think there were no GTS models in '67? Just GT with the 383 engine code, then the GTS was created for '68.

Correct me if I'm wrong...trying to recall reading an article from 25+ years ago.

I had/have a 67 Dart with a big block that I was certain was a BB car from factory. My brother has it now...

Right I said they made it an option later in '67...but I'm not sure when...again just remembering an article I read about it.

Do you recall what the vin started with? LP or LS?

I do not, Had plenty of spirited discussions about this with know everything Moparites at car shows. No BB '67.

I own a legit 67 Dart GTS 383 4 speed car. It’s dark copper with a copper interior. I have a Chrysler build card to prove it. The GTS was an option on the GT that included the 383, front manual disk, heavy duty suspension, thicker torsion bars, 6 leaves in rear, front sway bar, and the uni body was boxed in underneath for more structural rigidity. 457 Dart 383 big block darts built in 67. 228 autos 229 sticks. They started building them mid year 67 approx January because the 383 was already in the 67 formula s Barracuda. Vin code started with LP in 67. In 68 became LS. There is an H in the 5 digit to signify 383 HP. You couldn’t get the 383 without front manual disk as per order sheet. The problem with restoring these cars is a lot of 1 year only parts.

My dad bought his dart in Feb of 1967. I recall seeing somewhere that the 1967 GTS with the 383 was available in March of 1967, "missed it by that much!" Cant find where I saw it but that is my recollection. I also saw an old Hot Rod article that talked about the 1967 Dart GTS did not have the hood like the 68 and 69 but a standard 67 type hood.

In reading the GTS Registry the first listed Vin shows that it "...was built on February 17, 1967..." two others showed March 3rd build dates.

Yep they started building them in February 1967, LP23H72xxxxxx. I have owned a couple 67 GTS convertibles only have one right now, approximately 12-20 made only 6 known at the moment, LP27H72xxxxxx. They all had standard Dart GT trim with flat hood and all GT emblems except the fenders which had GTS and 383 FOUR BARREL emblems, all had manual front disc brakes and 280 HP 383 engines with 17" unsilenced air cleaners.

Jim is 100% correct.

Here is a link to the scan page from the dealers sales book.

1967 383 ~ "Which Came First" ~ The Barracuda or Dart GTS

Yes the Barracuda 383 came out long before the Dart, Chrysler had no plans on giving the Dart the 383 until Mr. Norm put one together and drove it to Detroit to beg Chrysler to let Dodge do it too. I still have a survivor 67 383 4-speed Barracuda Formula S and mu burnt 69 383 4-speed Dart GTS. I can tell you one thing, the manual disc brakes on the 67 were some of the best I have ever driven on an A-Body!
