I need a timing tab for a 1968 340 Barracuda. I'm not sure but maybe 1968 273, 318 and 340 are all the same? Maybe someone could jump in and tell me. Also, could you please provide a pick. Thanks, Lou

The 68 had the timing marks made on the cover the 67 and earlier had the tab that bolted on. I might have a timing plate I will have to look.

I bought a bolt on timing tab here from a member. I used it on my 75 360 to move the timing marks to the passenger side. The the 67 & back LA timing tabs will work on all displacement LAs as far as I know.

I can't find the one I have, I will look around some tomorrow.

While I have no evidence that it was original (and no evidence that it wasn't original), my early build 340 car had the '67 style cover with the steel tab when we bought it. The engine had been changed to a '73 short block, but those parts were still on the car when we bought it.

Mine is a late build '68, and it has the tab.
The block is original to the car, but that doesn't mean the cover and tab weren't swapped out in the forty years before I bought it.

How late? I know of an April or May build '68 GTS convertible (#s matching) that had the cast in timing marks.

June 3 as far as I can tell. The engine may have been built much earlier. I haven't looked for anything other than the VIN near the oil pressure sender. I'll be underneath it this week probably. I might be able to see casting dates. Is there an engine build date stamped anywhere?

FYI
Early build 68's still used a bolt on timing tab on the cover.
Unknown when the molded in cover came into use when the supply of the plain covers ran out.

I'm always amazed at how helpful members on this site can be. I've tried to pick up and learn as much as I can from all the knowledgable members here. That being said, as far as I can see, the tab is correct for early to mid builds. That's not to say some leftover tabs didn't get put on a late build. Crazy things happened in the factory all the time. My car is Oct 15 so the tab fits my narrative. This can be confirmed through the part numbers lining up in 68 catalog. Item found
