Been a mopar man since 69' but definately was a chevy man . I'm 83 years old but when I was young we used to race in the street . Not that much traffic back then . My first car after leaving military service in 1964 was a 1964 catalina pontiac , 389ci and after smoking that motor I had a 421ci tripower (three duces) installed . If you don't know the history , race on sunday and buy on monday . That was the car then . Second car was a 1965 chevy impala with 327ci with auto cause I got married and wife wouldn't learn standard . Third car was all new 1967 comaro with 350ci and 4 speed . Very fast and very like corvet . Loved this car , had wrinkle wall slicks , and very seldom lost race . A salesman and his mechanic from Spitzer Motor City in Parma challenged me to a race . They had a 1968 Dart , torqueflite , 340ci . I told them if they beat me I would buy one . I raced my new car that night for 300 miles . Have loved these cars since .
You got about a dozen years on me.
I agree; those Darts sure were a lotta fun;
In fall of 1970, at the tender age of 17, and in grade 10; I bought a very low mileage 70 Swinger 340-4speed, in mint condition. Even the tires were in great shape.
Just 4 years later, it was on it's second or third of everything, not to mention having burned up 7 pairs of tires. I was 22, owed back-rent, the car was worn out; and Warranty Department wasn't gonna give me a third engine , nor a second trans, nor a clutch, nor a second differential; and the steering suspension and brakes were all shot, and so, sadly, I sold it in winter of 75.
Hyup, I agree; she was a lotta fun;
but the learning curve was intense, cuz it handled like crap, especially on those Polyglass tires; and attrition was ridiculous.
Day by day I got a great education out of it. That car taught me a few things;
1) how to drive, and
2) how to fix stuff, and
3) working for a living, and paying my way sucks, and
4) the fine art of budgeting, and
5) yes, I regret selling the car, but the education was priceless.
Welcome to the Club.
