I have a 1970 Duster that was a 340 factory car

Currently has a 440 (1969 block) swap

I need to get a battery for the car and am not sure what size will fit

I measured the battery tray and it looks like its 7" x 11" (inside the tray lip)

It appears as if I can clear an 8" to 9" tall battery

Thanks for any and all help and suggestions

Group 24, top post with the + post on the end towards the firewall. + post should also be on the corner closest to the engine instead of the fender. Autozone typically has the best batteries.

There are/ were 2 group 24 types. 24C fit pretty much everything "that it fits" except Ford. Ford used 24F which has the posts reversed compared to 24C, and a flange down low for the Ford type holdown clamp.

Most modern "parts persons" have no damn idea what a 24 anything is

napa batteries have been pretty reliable batteries for me. tried oboys,az,aap. my ranking is napa, aap,az no oboys. oh i forgot walmart's best batteries the never start series. napa will be 7524. 75 month total warr/18 month free replacement. stay away from napa red label. equal to wmns or oboys.

Group 24 seems like a fit for sure

I have read that Group 27 will also fit?

Group 24; 10-5/8"L x 6-3/4"W x 8-7/8"T
Group 27; 12-1/2"L x 6-13/16"W x 8-15/16"T

My battery tray appears to be 11"L x 7"W

I should be able to clear a battery that is 9" tall

Is the 27 that much better than the 24?

A group 34 looks like it would also fit: 10-1/4"L x 6-13/16"W x 7-7/8"T
Group 34 has a lot of CA/CCA, compared to the Group 24/27

I don't think a group 27 ever came in an A body? They tray is too short. B, C, E bodies and trucks had longer battery trays, and some versions of all of them had a need for a bigger battery. 68 SS Darts and Barracudas had the gigantic battery in the trunk....but they were a different animal anyways.

True yes, the tray will be too short to fit the 27

Group 24 have 700 CCA and are $130
37.4 pounds

Group 34 (34N) have 800 CCA and are $120
37.7 pounds

Yep, the tray is too short for a group 27. See if you can find one with the 2 pull off caps so you can jazz it up with one if these kits.

.........And why 'n 'ell Ford just had to have reversed posts is beyond me. There only needs to be about 4 vehicle battery sizes in the world........small (22) pretty much (24) HD (27) and big and bigger truck (4 and 8D) GM side posts did not improve anything

Ford had their batteries on the passenger side didn't they?

Tractor Supply and WalMart seem to have the cheapest batteries around me

Going to pick one up this week........still unsure, Group 24 or Group 34

I will compare the CA/CCA and the price

Got a Wal-Mart battery in Group 24 size

Fits really good

You said it. "Good luck" with any parts store personnel anymore.

Now I need a new (longer) negative battery cable......with the + post towards the firewall

Looks like a 26" to 28" long section with a 7/16" hole lug?

Any confirm or deny?

I know its an old post, but in case anyone else looks this up searching for batteries I've been using a group 27. It doesn't fit in the tray exactly, but the strap still fits over it to secure it(same width and height as the 24). It's just a bit longer but hasn't caused me any issues. But I did just replace it today with a 34 because I couldn't find a 24 with 800 CCA. I got an optima red agm, pricey but I've seen a lot of classic car drivers recommend them for longevity so I'm trying it.
