So whats the scoop on the lighter location in a 70 Swinger, 340 4speed, in the bezel, in the ashtray, both??

My 70 Swinger 340 4sp has both
I believe the bezel lighter was for the passenger, ash tray lighter for the driver
I did use the bezel location for a hand choke cable back in the early 80's, worked great. My exhaust heat riser valve was removed by the PO.

I didnt realize that sometimes there could be two. Thats great to know, thanks!

My 70 GT had one in the dash and one in the console. I can't say if it was born that way or not since I bought it in the mid 1980s.

All 1970 Dart and Duster 340 cars came with the bezel mounted lighter, however, I don't think any came with an extra lighter mounted in the ashtray. It's possible a dealer or a PO installed one since there is a hole for one. If a second lighter was an option there would probably be a second plug for one in the wiring harness and I don't remember seeing one when I had the dash apart.

Ahhhh, so just because there is a hole for one, doesn't necessarily mean that there was one installed from the factory.
This confused me further because the 1970 reproduction bezels that are being offered for sale dont have a hole for the lighter

The Rallye Dash bezel I bought from Classic Industries in 2016 had an outline on the back for drilling a hole for the lighter so you have the option of not installing a lighter.

From long ago maybe moparts
Chrysler saw a safety issue with the passenger reaching over around the shifter for the ashtray lighter.
I think IIRC that the bezel lighter was included if you got the rear passenger ashtray armrest
My 70 dart had both lighters and factory wired for both plus the rear ashtrays

The Rally dash thread The Rally dash thread gives good descriptions on the A body 67-71 Rallye Dash lighter locations. The lighter location on the bezel is mentioned in the second post, "a cigarette lighter was added to the right of the cluster. this was bcoz 68 didnt have one in the ash tray due to the unique to 68 lower dash pads". All 68 A bodies had the lighter on the dash. Only 69 and 70 Rallye dashes kept the lighter on the bezel. The 71 Rallye dash went back to the ashtray.

You could install 3 if you wanted to. One in the dash bezel. One in the ash tray in the dash. And one in the console ash tray.

Thanks for the link to that thread, there is lots of good information in it

How are the two lighters wired? Is there a separate wiring harness with two lighter plugs that plugs into the main harness's lighter plug?

Bought my 70 Swinger in 88 . Lighter was in the dash the ash tray lighter spot was vacant. But I'm sure one could be installed. I never heard of two lighters I figured the ralley dash just used the same ash tray as the standard and left the hole there as the lighter is in the dash. this is my $.02 as I do not know for sure if they factory did or dint have 2 lighters in the ralley dash cars.

Going by memory but a hot wire is on the pin on the center of the socket and the socket either grounds through the metal dash or there may be a ground wire on a tab on the socket. If one were to run two lighters i would think you could splice off the hot wire of the existing lighter. The ground is easy either through the metal dash or a dedicated ground wire. i also beleive the wiring may already be there if the factory ran two lighters etc.

I suspect the ralley dash didnt have the lighter in the ash tray and someone saw that hole there and just dropped it in...it goes in the dash. Yes the lighter seems like its on the passenger side but the A body is narrow so it isnt much of a reach from the drivers side. Im 5.8 and I can reach it from behind the wheel.

The previous owner could have added the ashtray lighter [bought my dart in 1978] but I doubt Chrysler would cover the expense of a longer wire for the dash lighter and punch a hole in the ashtray location [a sharp hole at that] and then leave it like that.
I could reach mine in the dash also, but I wouldn't pass the tiny ashtray lighter to any rear passengers or have the front passenger reach around the floor shifter to use it also.
Maybe the factory had a plug in the ashtray hole-I never saw one.
Does anyone have a picture of the ashtray location?
Is there even a hole there?
It's possible after 54 years, we will never know for sure.
