Just to clarify, a 401 is a big block.

Its neither a big block or a small block. 290 through to 401 are the same size externally.

The 390 and 401 have always been considered a big block. Just like the 389-455 Pontiac. But really the pecker contest isn't helping the OP at all.

Oh and the 290-390 up to 1970 was the short deck. The 304-401 from 70 on was a tall deck. So the 290 and 401 are not even in the same family.

sounds like a cool build. i think swap wise it can be done, my only concern would be the exhaust manifolds and clearance. check the width, and the routing on drivers side.

Looks like the 390 could have been a short or tall deck depending on what year.

Oh jeez, the 401 was a great performance motor. That in a Javelin or AMX, even a Gremlin!..or Duster? Just check its oil pump for wear on the filter adapter. Busy lookin front ends on those motors.

They had a oil pump in the front cover like the Buicks did correct? **** design.

Cool! Can't say Ive seen it done before and that's ok. That's what the spirit of hot rodding is all about. Good luck with the swap!
