Hi everyone! Long time Mopar owner, first post to the board!

One of my "back burner" projects is a 1970 Plymouth GTX with a 440 engine. I have owned it since 1984 and it has been more or less parked for the last 10 years while I pursued other interests.

The time has almost come for me to pull it out the garage and start the restoration I have been waiting to do. To get "warmed up" to the task so to speak I went looking for a smaller & cheaper sibling to buy.

To fit in the current garage it had to be one of the smaller offerings, have the "large bolt pattern" wheels so I could swap running gear with the GTX is needed and reduce the number of rims floating around, already have a V8 so I didn't go broke getting V8 brakes, transmission, engine cradle, etc. and have factory disk brakes.

So pretty much this narrowed my search down to a 73-74 Duster, Dart Sport or a 67-74 Duster, Dart, Scamp or Demon that someone had already converted over to larger bolt pattern and disks.

The car is going to be used for some light car shows & drive in movie use, drive to work when the mood suits and going to some cruise nights.

Eventually I'll give the car to Leah (my daughter) when she is old enough to drive.

After weeks of searching this is what popped up-

Trust me the price was cheap- I had been watching junk go for $2500 with 6 cylinder engines. I don't know if buyers did not bid due to the rust or the fact they would have to drag off two cars but I snapped it up for $1500.

The seller was honest and the car is what he said it was if not better- The frame rails were mint, it has a good running 318 V8 engine, the running gear is in sound condition (mandatory vehicle inspections yearly in the state it was from) and it has factory a/c which is fairly rare. The black interior is a nice bonus as well as a desirable option.

I stripped the car down and dropped it off at a friends body shop, the interior and exterior will be fully refurbished in another 2 weeks.

The white top was stripped off first thing, it's not going back, eww!!

The insides look rough but no worries- New carpert, steering wheel, kick panels and seat skins are already on the way via UPS! Some minor paint work on the dash and everything will look like the day it rolled off the assembly line.

Edit- 4 weeks out on the seat skin, frak!

Performance work is going to be limited to a dual exhaust setup at the moment, I'd like to be driving as soon as possible not tinkering in the garage for weeks.

When the car is finished it will look somewhat like these two vehicles- Red with a black stripe running front to rear, no hood scoop though. I am going with factory hood pins though.

The rims I'm going to be running can been seen here, for $99 each shipped from Summit Racing a huge steal!

The car is going to have BF Goodrich radial T/A's all the way around, 205-60-15 on the front and 255-60-15 on the rear.

I have all next week off and will post pictures as work progresses, the car should be back from the body shop on Thursday.

I have already polished, painted or repaired a number of items and reassembly should go smoothly.

Question- I'm going to be cleaning the front and rear bumper supports this weekend, does anyone know what the original color they were from the factory?

How about the two fender supports up front?

Looks like my old 76 feather duster. I think I remember this car didnt it come with a dart sport donor with highback buckets? Gl with your project keep us posted with lots of pictures.

Yes, that is the one from Ebay.

I'm going to keep the bench in the Duster, not something you see every day eh? Most kids don't know what a front bench seat is, lol.

What do you mean by bumper supports and fender supports?? If you mean the bumper filler panels, they are suppose to be argent silver like the rallye wheels. I used the paint for the rallye wheels that is in a quart can and sprayed mine. Mine only came equipped with the filler panel on the rear and not on the front. Front bumber is solid mounted and the rear bumper has the impact absorbers on it. I've seen other cars like this and others with absorbers on both ends.

If the fender supports your talking about are the reinforcement rods under the hood that runs from the firwall to the fender, they are suppose to be black.

The reason I know is because mine was an unrestored 42,000 mile car when I got it.

Hope this helps,
Barry.

Mine are body color, car is unrestored.

I'm referring to the brackets for the bumper which I'm pretty sure are semi flat black. The fender supports are the struts that run from the front bumper brackets to the bottom front of the front fenders.

Body shop has been working like mad getting the panels into shape, so far so good! Spent yesterday painting bumper brackets, supports, plate brackets, etc and chasing parts & supplies all over town.

Two of the tires are mounted and balanced, the other two will be in on Thursday. Waiting for a package from Jacks Auto Parts and some Ebay purchases. Hood pins were mocked up and holes drilled, hood is ready for paint. Need to call Legendary today, they charged my credit card in full even though item has not shipped yet nor will it for 4 weeks.

Hi gary

Sorry I missed your first post.

Belated 'Welcome Aboard" and glad to see you here.

Just one question right now. Do you still have Relentless and is she running?

For those of you that don't know Gary, Relentless was a Silver Plymouth Reliant K car that ran in the mid tens at 132 mph and change. You may have
seen this car at the Nat's a few years ago.

You can check it out at

Again, Welcome and good to hear from you again

1) Yes.

2) Running yes, but not with the 10 second drivetrain.

The car will be hitting the track again Tony... in much faster trim than last seen too :snakeman:

I'm going to play about with some RWD stuff for a bit (The Duster and my GTX which has been waiting 10 years) and build the new garage (30 x 40) before the Reliant comes out to play.

I have some heavy work to do on the car before it comes out.

Video of the Reliant running for those who have not seen it before-

All I can say is WOW!!!Welcome aboard. And also looks like you picked up a nice little project, and a parts car to boot.Only in the U.S,can,t find deals like that up here in Ontario,Canada.

Some body shop pictures from this afternoon.

The car is going to be block sanded shortly and the shop is painting the door jams, doors edges and hood underside tonight.

Floorpan is coated with POR-15 and will be sprayed with body color after.

Thanks for the video memories Gary.

That is my all time favorite car to watch going down the strip!

I should have bought your '89 Shelby for the drivetrain. 12.60's are not
that shabby either.

later,
Tony

A few more pictures, the car will be ready for pickup on Thursday and the parts come off the benches.
