2 1/2" or 3"

Ok the barracuda is going to the body shop this week.When it comes back we are going to do the exhaust.I am going to make this car as quiet as passable.I know it has a lot of motor in it but I was wondering do i really need 3" exhaust.If you guys think 3" please tell me why? Mark
 
Not knowing how much power the engine is making, 2-1/2 exhaust pipe is alot quiter than a 3 inch system. Some people argue over exhaust tube size for best power or streetablity. I stay with the exhaust companies recomendations that over 450 HP, a 3 inch system will (In most cases) deliver the best power.

Sound control becomes an issue with a bigger sound outlet. Think bigger the speaker, the more sound. Of course, muffler choice has a major roll in this. I've seen and heard a glass pack replace a muffler on a slant 6 sound like holy heck was breakin loose. (Oh wait, that was my aear drum breakin)
 
I understand all that but at 450hp your not going to use on the street as a daily driver.I also understand that muffled race cars would need 3" exhaust but my question is for a daily driver more then a race car.Do you really need 3". Mark
 
2 1/2 really sounds good and will help keep you out or trouble. if you are going to race it you can always put cutouts in.

No, you really don't need 3 inch pipeing for the street. Since I still don't know how much power your engine is making, I'll make a blanket statment with a grain of salt for understanding and a rubber band for lee-way.

2-1/2 inch pipeing is fine and enuff for most street machines on the road today.

Look I am trying to be good hear HA ha HA saying that you wont use 450hp on the street.The engine dynoed at 715hp and 698ft of toque.The hp is way to much for the street also see why I am trying to keep it as quiet as passable.I want to see if someone sells a quiet in 3".They will be going in the stock location. Mark
 
After seeing those 2 1/4 headers, I'd hate to see you choke her down with 2 1/2 exhaust. Let her breath!
 
Don't mean to be smart but good luck keeping 715 hp. quiet.

Hay mike thets not beening smart.This is why I put this out there.So far I dont see anything out there to quiet this thing down.I havent seen mufflers with 3" that say quiet thats why I was thinking of 2 1/2"s.I know I am going to have to use 3" exhaust I am just tring to talk my self out of it. Mark

Jeeeez Mark, I feel like you think I'm being a smart as, a jerk or something. Until now, i had no idea how much power your engine is making. Do realize that the forun is alot like a computer program, crap info in, crap info out. Since you failed to provide ANY decent info to begin with, any and all fustrating feelings your having shouldn't be placed on me.

And yes! I LOL hard about thinking that 450 HP is to much for a daily driver. IMO, it's a "You gotta be kidding me" HP level to live with. However, this is also something that grandma may find way to much and someone else find piss poor for anything but grandma.

I personaly know people that run more powerful engines than yours everyday except poor weather. Seriously, what makes you think your engine isn't good enuff for everyday useage? To much power for the street is only a point of view as well as the cars set up.

Why is it a Ha ha ha ha on me for running 400+ HP on the street.

Is it not good enuff for you?
Does it make me un-qualified to answer, try and help you?

If you don't like the answer, perhaps you should start with better info in, a it of understanding from others and get off your I'm better than thou throne.

At your current HP level, good luck, you go figure it out via a few muffler swaps.
 
2 1/2 is fine for your application. The only time you need 3" is only if you were to exceed 500 CI. It has nothing to do with horsepower, it is called swept volume.
 
2.5" should work good, use a x pipe with the large 20" dynomax super hemi mufflers, and if you could fit some resonators in the tail pipe section you will fine,

How quiet is an 800 hp Hemi gonna be anyway......the picture is not of my car. Dont think tailpipes are gonna happen.....

3" for sure thats a whole bunch of power, to be honest with you thats 3½" territory,but hard to keep it quiet,if you had a fuelcell i would have recomended some very long 3"mufflers where the stock fueltank sits stock,over here we have a brand called apple racing mufflers and they have some very long 3"mufflers that with an X-pipe can keep a 470-500hp smallblock quiet enough that you would never even recognice it on the freeway as anything out of the ordinary,but still sounds very deep at idle,thats the only mufflers i can think of from the top of my head that i feel safe saying would keep 715hp fairly quiet while driving without loosing alot of power

not to stirr the pot but are you for real? the more power you make the more burned air and fuel will exist the exhaust port and that ends up in the collector wich in turn ends up in the exhaust system for example a 600hp 340cui smallblock will lose a lot of power from using something small as 2½" exhaustpipes while at the same time a bonestock worn out 500cui caddilac engine wont gain anything worth caring about from a dual 3"system,its all about how much power you make, but keeping it quiet is a whole diferent game
 
Rumblefish First I had to read you post a couple of times to get it.The HA HA HA thing was your second post { LOL sez you! Ha ha ha ha. I have and will again right soon}.I was laughing with you not at you.The reason I didn,t put the hp rating on hear it because anyone knows that in the exhaust area pipe diameter means a lot with noise.I don,t what I said to have you go off in the wrong direction but when the other guys said good luck I didn,t make mad,ther are right good luck.By noway did I think antone including you wrer being a smartass until now .One uther thing you can take your comments and shove them up your ***.It is allways got to be one Mark
