Hi all, I ordered a 10' clutch from NAPA for my 318, 273 flywheel. Then, I found out about Brewers cp-10 kit, which is what came out of car. Previous owner put the disk in backwards!
My question is, is Napa's 10 inch Borg-Beck clutch the same as Brewers cp-10? Car is a 66 Dart, mild 318,273 bell housing and flywheel.Want to put the "strongest" clutch in that I can w/out going to a 10.5 inch. Any help on this would be more than appreciated!

I suspect the NAPA pressure plate is not going to fit the 273 flywheel - the clutch might. With the Brewer's I believe it's designed to fit the smaller 273 flywheel with an actual 10 inch clutch. I bought the Brewers package for my 273 - the clutch does measure 10 inches and the pressure plate ears that bolt to the flywheel are what I think they term "scalloped" to fit the flywheel and still use a 10 inch clutch. I would give him a call and and discuss it. Wayne is a Good guy and company to deal with.

Thanks Dartman--NAPA was talking about 318/273 10". When they started talking 318 kinda threw me. I ordered it, but as you stated, I bet it won't fit. I have talked to Dan and Wayne at Brewers--prob will go with their cp-1o kit. We'll see .Wicked nice people at Brewers.

I used a Brewers kit in my 66 with good results. That's what I recommend.

After receiving and before returning the NAPA kit, would you check the fit of how off (or not) where the pressure plate bolts to the flywheel? I and probably others would be interested in how it fits (or doesn’t).

Yup, I can do that. I cancelled the NAPA order this morning, the clutch is still in some warehouse in the upper mid-west. If it does get here still, I will certainly get you requested information.
I have had this car,[ 4 door,318,833, 8.75], for 2 years--been slowly fixing all the screw-ups from PO. Been lurking on this great site for a few years, will no doubt availe myself of your guys knowledge ALOT more. Thanks!!

I've got to learn how to "use" the site also. lol

NAPA clutch came in today. Fits like a glove.

Hi Dartman, NAPA clutch/pp came today---fits like a glove. I can't imagine what the difference might be between theirs and Brewers, other than almost 100 dollars w/shipping. Any idea what the diff.[if any] might be? I already ordered Brewers, be here tomorrow. I'd like to think I didn't blow 100 dollars going w/Brewers.....

Very interesting that everything fits the flywheel do well! I went with the Brewer’s stuff because everyone said it works and fits. Can you take some pics and post them of how the NAPA stuff fits? Being a less expensive alternative, I’m sure other early A people would be interested in saving some coin with the NAPA kit

In reading posts on this subject, it appears there have been troubles w/aftermarket kits, though NAPA was/is never specifically mentioned. Seems Brewers is a kit nobody has any complaints about.

Sorry, I just put it together on the NAPA counter---don't actually have it in my hands. Went w/Brewers as I already ordered it.

OK no problem. I’m guessing you fit the clutch and pp on the flywheel to see if it would line up on the bolt holes?

I wonder what problems have been reported on kits other than Brewers?

The Brewers kit will probably use stronger springs in the pressure plate to hold the HP 273 and they have the correct shoulder bolts for the pressure plate. I could never get a stock 10 in /6 clutch to hold the 273. They typically started to slip in high gear after a month or two.

Thanks, almost done installing the Brewers kit.

And if I remember right there is pockets for

Do yourself a big favor, while you have the inspection cover off, adjust the air gap between the throw out bearing and the clutch fingers. Cycle the pedal a few times and recheck. The gap can be a 1/8"-1/4" and the free play on the pedal should be fine. I installed my first clutch, got in a hurry, and adjusted the free play on the pedal. The throw out bearing was riding on the pressure plate fingers and the bearing overheated and seized. It ground up the fingers and ruined the clutch. I thought may be it was a cheap clutch and the fingers weren't adjusted properly. (nope, my fault it failed) The replacement was a Brewer kit and I had the local Clutchmasters check it out. It was perfect right out of the box. It has been in for probably 10 years with no issues.
