I am thinking of doing some exhaust work to my car. My engine is a mostly stock 273 commando. From what I read and my budget I am thinking 340 manifolds would be a better choice than headers due mostly to fitment issues. Any thoughts on that? Also I am running duals..would 2.5 pipe be overkill? Thanks

2.5" is even big for a stock 318 so you should run no bigger than 2.25" exhaust. Some will say that you can't go to big but it is just not true, you will lose torgue with going to large on the exhaust. Really you should use 2" but I don't put 2" on anything. I have a custom exhaust business I operate out of a shop at my home. I only do performance cars, street rods and race cars. No everyday driver stuff. Summit has stainless tips that are larger than the pipe being used. This will give the look of a big exhaust with the small exhaust torgue. They have a 2.25" tip that has a 3" outlet. There are also oval tips with the 2.25" pipe size available from other suppliers.

Yepp! 2 1/4 WOULD DO IT. I have that on one of my car and thats sofar the best result I coulds get.

Another route would be to use the commando single exhaust system. You can get everything from Accurate Ltd. If you do go this route leave the muffler off and use only the resonator. You'll really like the sound.

I'd like to hear that sound. I am planning on the Accurate exhaust on my 66 Dart. Mike

Sounds like Ill go with 2.25 pipe. Any ideas on headers vs manifolds or what would be a good manifold choice? From what Ive been reading headers seem like a bad choice for my aplication. I was thinking of maybe using 318 or 340 manifolds for a little extra flow?

well, you could go with TTI headers, expensive, but the fitment is fantastic. you should be able to run these to duals with no problem. 340 manifolds will fit, but finding a pair in decent shape for less than $400 might be hard, or not. original sound came thru dynomax turbo mufflers.

Headers may be a bit much for a stock 273. I put 1971 360 exhaust manifolds on my 1970 Dodge Dart with a 318. The engine also has a stock 68 340 intake manifold, also got 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust, heddman x-pipe and flowmaster style mufflers. This added quite a boost in power and sounds awesome! 360 manifolds are cheaper and easier to find than 68-70 340 manifolds. Just make sure the driver side manifold is from an a-body, the passenger side manifold should all be the same. Good luck!!

That's a beautiful barracuda, I really like that color. I had the same stock 273 commando in my 67 barracuda. I put the 2.250 dual exhaust on it from accurate also. A couple problems I had were; when I ordered the system it only came with 340 head pipes for the hipo exhaust manifolds. They have a different flange than your 273 manifolds. So I bought a set of 340 68 A body manifolds, they did not fit my 273 heads. They did bolt up but had about 1\4 inch open spot on the bottom of the manifold. Eight exhaust leaks. My heads don't have a big enough machined area below the exhaust port for the manifold to seal aganist. Maybe 318 heads do, I don't know. So I had a mufler shop make some head pipes for me. The second problem I had is that when its damp or eaely morning and the car is idling the exhaust doese'nt get hot enough to burn off the water vapor that comes from gasoline. When I'm going down the road its not a problem, just when its idling when its cool out. It spits out black water droplets on my bumper. Bob

Well theres a few 340 manifolds around here but its good to know about the fitment issues. My head pipes arent in bad shape..Im going to look into this a little more, maybe Id be wiser to just replace my mufflers and tail pipes and leave the manifolds and head pipes untouched. Thanks for all your help guys and if you have any more advice please share it.

carpart67, if you need a pair of 318 mainfolds, I have a pair in good condition from a 73 Dart Sport that I want to sell. If you might want them just make me an offer plus shipping.
