I am sure that this question has been asked before, but here goes. What all need to be done to replace a 273 with a later 318 in and early "A" body? Will the trans bolt up? What 273 parts (waterpump, oil pan, etc.) can be reused on the 318?
Thanks guys.

You will have to use the 273 water pump. Everything else should fit. Why are you swapping? The 273 is a great engine and will get tons better mileage that a 318.

When you say later...pre magmun or magnum??? Either will bolt up to the trans... Not 100% sure with the balance of the magmun??? Pre-magnum just swap out the water pump, I'd replace with new one... Use all the accessory brackets and pulleys. I just switched to the later style water pump and radiator, passenger side exit. Also the timing tab from the 273 should be swapped.Oil pan, as long as it is a center sump you are okay... rear sump should work too...

Depending on the year 318 the register for the torque converter on the back of the crank might be larger, if so have an adapter made.

I did this swap with my 65. If I remember the 273 stuff we used was the water pump, the 90* oil filter adapter, the kick down linkage for the trans, oil pan, and we had to machine a pilot bushing for the engine trans mating.
