Are all LA 318s internally balanced? Are lockup converters only set up for externally balanced engines?

Yes from the factory all LA 318's are internally balanced.

No, chrysler used lock up converters behind 318s going back at least as far as 1978 that were all neutral balanced.

All factory 318s are internally balanced.
Lockup convertor balance depends on original application. V6/318s (and 5.2s & 4.7s, for that matter) are internally balanced, 360/5.9s are external (although the external balance differs between LA360 and Magnum 5.9).

5.9 balance weight is on the flex plate and LA 360-balance weight is on the convertor.
Agree, and that has been my experience as well. But, I have had some people on this site swear up and down that the very early magnum 5.9s had a weighted convertor- I've never seen one, and I suspect they were mistaking a late roller LA for a magnum; but I also acknowledge that I can never say never- I haven't seen it all by a longshot.
