318 Oil Question

Ok I Hear Of A Lot Of People Using Shell Rotella And Chevron Delo 400 15w40 Diesil Oils. I Use Shell Rotella 15w40 In My 80,000 Mile 318 With A New Comp260 Cam That Has 550 Miles On It Now.i Also Added A Bit Of Lucas Oil Stabilizer To It, But I Dont Think It Does Much. Im Getting Ready To Do Another Oil Change And My Father Has A Ton Of Chevron Delo 400 15w40 Sitting At Home(for His Kenworth). I Would Love To Take Advantage Of This If It Is Good Oil For The Package. Which Of The Two Oils Is Good?i Know They Both Have The Wanted Zinc. Is The Lucas Oil Stabilizer Worth Adding? I Did Notice Some Oil Pressure Gain When I Used It. Thanks.
 
The Delo is a good oil you will be fine using it. But I must tell you after next year ('07) the diesel oils won't have the zinc package that all of you are using them for. They have to go to a low ash low emissions formula like the gasoline oil. The '07 and later diesel engines have particulate filters and emissions controls on them and the old oil will clog them up. So after '07 diesel oil won't have the ZDDP package either. You'll need to find a non-emission racing oil or use the GM additive. I have been using Brad Penn Oil in my Duster this past year and it is great. Brad Penn bought the old Kendall refinery and bought the formulation. It even has the green tint that the onld Kendall GT-1 had.

We are also likely to see more zinc based additives like the GM supplement or Energy Release www.energyrelease.com I would avoid additives like Lucas or STP which basically just make your oil thick. There is no advantage to running such an additive in a new engine, and they can cause real undesirable effects in cold weather. The zinc rich oils are great for break-in, but personally I switch to a full synthetic afterward.
 
Comp cams has a bottle also, Summit Racing wants $15 for it. I wounder if that GM EOS stuff still has zinc ? Reason being it says its ok for new cars and we all know all the smog crap a new car has now. Might also be a good idea to use 1 bottle of that Comp break in stuff each time you change your oil if you can not find that off road racing oil.

I will check with my local NAPA dealer if they have racing oil, I am using valoline VR1 racing 20w-50 but its from Auto Zone so its not the good stuff anymore I guess. Thanks EPA, thanks for making my life more work.
 
Napa is supposed to carry or can order Royal Purple now IIRC. That link I posted to Brad Penn Oil......I know that Best Machine in Michigan uses it in their builds and Brad Penn was out at the Chrysler Classic shows here with a booth. If you click on the link you can go to their main page and find a dealer in your area. My dealer will drop a case at my house so I just have to call and order it....it's arounf $35 for a case and that included delivery.
 
i did some more research on oil and im tending to lean away from the diesel oils,as they are losing their advantages after 2007, as we've discussed. i checked numerous pieces of analysis on different oils. the valvoline vr-1 racing oil(20w50) had excellent viscosity index and a zinc level of .20 percent. that was substantially more than the others(the title of the article is:More Than You Ever Want To Know About Oil). i switched over yesterday. i have drove 100 miles since 12pm yesterday and everything is well. oil pressure numbers have actually improved, mainly because it is 20w50 weight instead of 15w40 weight. the price per quart wasnt bad either:eek:nly $3.50 at napa.
