Ok I have a 73 duster 318/727/8.25 rear
I have an extra 318 long block (stock) and a chance to get a 360 short block (stock)
I have a set of j heads that have big valves and some port work
I am wanting to build a street machine that can hit the highway for a few hundred miles and still have fun at the track occasionally and smoke the tires

So that being said what is my best combination on a budget

One more thing, I am not 100 % but I think the torque converter may be specific to 360 also.

318 is a good motor but a 360 is a better platform for making power, 0.9-1.1 hp per cid is good streetable number to shoot for, also 360 heads have more power potential than 318. Over any given rpm band larger engines are generally gonna make more power through out the band eg.. idle-5000 rpm to 1500-5500 rpm.

No..it is not....only difference is the balancing of the engine.......use a b&m 360 externally balance flexplate use any converter that fit the fits the trans with no weights on it

42 more ci!! theres no replacement on displacement! i mean you can build a mean 318 but you said racing! more bang fer ya buck going 360!

360 always. However, my dad owns a 1976 2 wheel drive dodge Ramcharger. Its and original 318 with 727. That truck has always been a good runner despite it's a heavy vehicle. She always ran out nice. But that is the exception in my opinion.

Ok cool. I did say I wasn't sure, I run 4 speed :)

OP , I have a 318, and two 340s with a 4 speed setup. the one thing I like is the interchangeability. 318 and 340 I can use alot of the same parts, flywheel pulleys etc. Although like said with a 360 you just need to have a few specific things and you are in. If you cab get the 360 for next to nothing i say finding the rest of the parts would be easy.

Well I bought the 360 it has the crank pulley, flex plate and a moroso pan on it just have to do some investigative work to see if the pan is correct for an A body

That pan fits an A body. Has the crank been balanced? If so, did they do it externally or make it internal? Pictures of the damper and flex plate can clear that up.

^^ Yeah I mean say you build a 318,youll always wonder if you should have went 360. especially if you have the 360 heads already. I am speaking in terms of the LA .

Ok new question while transporting the 360 with no heads on it my ratchet strap broke going around a bend and engine rolled over and all the lifters came out on one side of the engine and scattered in the bed of the truck (lifters not damaged) can I reuse them even though I don't know what bore they came out of (hydraulic non roller lifters)
If using the same cam
