318

Although often snubbed in favor of the 340 or 360 you can still get respectable power out of a 318. Several magazines have done "inexpensive" 400+ HP builds with them. I am putting this 318 in my Scamp.

Pretty good. It's what I have in the Demon. I rebuilt the 68 318 with 302 heads, Performer, AFB and a 276/286 .441 lift cam. Mine's a driver and I'm happy with it. If you're after more power, certainly a 340, 360, or BB is the way to go.

I actually prefer the 67-69 318s because they have the highest stock compression ratio of any of them. They don't have the durability legend of the /6, but it doesn't miss by much.

im buying a 68 318 any advice? Good Engine?

If it is capable of running in front of you, see and watch it run.
IF you know the seller, ask him how oil consumption is.

The engines are very good. I have purchased a '79 Dodge magnum with a 318 in it from the org. owner. He stopped recording miles and oil changes in '89 with over 320,000 miles when he gave it to his daughter for 4 years of collage about 2-1/2 hours away. Apon her return, it was then given to his son for also 4 years of collage in the same area.
(And good GOD, LOrd only knows what that car/engine went through with the kids. I suspect even more so with the boy.)

After getting the car back, he used it for daily transportaion from the suburbs to the city, a 40 mile trek one way each and everyday until I purchased it a few years ago.

All I did was tare it down and inspect it. While the tolorences are loose and the cam bearings needed a change out, I used the engine in my current Duster project. Adding a Edel. Intake w/4bbl carb, headers and a Crane cam, double roller timing chain for pep.

The heads only needed valve seals and they were very easy to install. Oil consumption is lite and my foot heavy.

While a 318 gets little respect due to it's known duty of people mover only status, there are enuff cubes to get a car going. Of course, more the merry, but theres enuff right there now to get going and well if you want to.

And that's all I got to say about that.
