340 balancer timing marks

Looking to buy a new harmonic balancer for my 340. Bought a new aluminum water pump with passanger side inlet. Assumed my current timing cover had marks on drivers side but I was wrong they are on passanger side. Will most aftermarket balancer timing marks line up? Like fluid dampner. Looking to avoid making my own marks or use timing tape. Thanks
 
No new balancers have marks for 69 and earlier. I have same setup and remarked my new Trickflow balancer.
If you can install new wp and balancer, you should be able to remark it.
 
Sounds like your switch to a 70 and up water pump has you on the right track, as long as you have the matching 70 and up timing cover that goes with it. Then the common aftermarket balancer is the last piece of the puzzle (along with a different radiator which it sounds like you are already planning on). When you order the balancer, order for a 1970 and up.

The radiator is what sent me down this path. Didn't like my options for drivers side upper and lower hoses. So I have the new radiator and water pump. Guess since my assumption was wrong I will order the timing cover and balancer. If marks line up.

What's the big deal about making your own mark. It should be checked anyway.
 
Not trying to be a know it all but I've seen TDC verification kick some pretty skilled people.
Not sure why you'd believe that. Very very simple. It is called a piston stop. I first learned to use one about 1971. Back then I used to find a disturbing no. of Ford 352/ 390s had slipped the balancer and impossible to otherwise set the timing for tune up

If you have an aftermarket wheel, degreed on the wheel for the pass side, all you need is the TDC point. You can make a tab, use a piston stop with say, masking tape to confirm the correct position, then scribe and paint the TDC marker.

Ya, that is known. I was just pointing out the inconsistency of the replacement parts and the stacked up issues with modification.

So basically it sounds like no aftermarket balancer will have the marks i need in the correct place. Better off finding TDC and using timing tape

If you're going to go that route, don't use timing tape. It almost always comes off. Just do this instead.

If you have the 70 and up set up, the timing marks are cast into the timing cover on the drivers side and they will be correct for harmonic balancers with a mark for 70 and up engines. It is my impression that all the aftermarket balancers that I am familiar with come marked for the 70 and up set up, or come with two crank keyways to be used for 70 and up and 69 and down.

I think that's correct. The ONLY exception I know of is either good used (if there is such) OR NOS such as from AMS (Frank Mitchell Mopars). But the NOS ones are still DECADES old and the rubber inertia ring is subjected to the same deterioration as any of the rest.

Which aftermarket balancers have both key ways? I have only seen 70 and up plus symmetric pulley pattern.

The aluminum water pump is 70 up, so all the aftermarket balancers will work with the drivers side timing mark on the cover.
