340 deck

I have my 340 block at the machine shop.
They machined the deck and noticed some plugs in the deck which he assumed were coolant passages.
Is this normal? Or did someone do something strange?
I have not been at machine shop to look or take a pic.
Maybe next week I can swing out that way for pics

No plugs should be on the deck. Just locating pins for cylinder heads

if the shop did, i'm not sure how important they are or if they can be replaced.

If it’s the coolant passages, that was not an uncommon practice years ago especially for race prepped blocks. If you were to look at factory original head gaskets compared to replacements some of the coolant passages in most are partially or fully blocked off. This is or was done to change the coolant flow thru the heads and if I remember correct helped balance coolant flow. But that’s been a long time so take it with a grain of salt.

quite a common practice to do on circle track blocks to redirect the flow of coolant, just like what Dubob said. Also for example, The 3 large holes in a 350 chevy would also get a threaded in bung with a small hole, this was referred to as a "deck stiffener".
