Isn't there a way to tell what car a 340 engine came out of by the number stamped along the oil pan rail? I recently bought a 340 for my '71 Demon and am just curious.

Not unless you track the vins.

Best you can do is Factory it rolled from, year and VIN sequence. From teh factory it rolled off of, you can potentially narrow the vehicle.

The number is 3B548027, the casting date is 2-8-70.

My 69 Dart has the full 13 digit VIN on the block

If yours is a partial, it looks like it could be the last 8 digits.

3 would mean 1973

B is Hammtrack plant

548027 is the sequential build number.

These numbers do not make sense with the 2-8-1970 casting date, so maybe it is not a partial VIN, are the numbers clearly stamped? is the casting date clearly marked?

Are you sure it is a "3" and not a "0"?

oooooops, the casting date is 2-8-73, not 70.

So it does look like a partial VIN

Got any cop friends? maybe they could run the partial vin to see if the original car is still on the road. Is that what you are trying to do? or do you just want to know what model car it came from?

Just curious, doesn't really matter to me one way or the other, it's going in my Demon regardles.
