hey all: I'm thinking about going with the original manifold on this 340 but I have some questions. First it's a 71 and it has a 5/16 hole on the drivers side just behind the thermostat opening, between there and the carb. No threads just a hole?! I've looked at other pix and others have it and nothing in it. The question is; is something s'posed to be there?

Also it's got a spot for an old choke stove which I don't plan on using. It doesn't go anywhere but I have seen caps to put over it. Do I need a topper? Anybody ever have trouble with carb clearance (manual choke 650 DP) w or w/o the topper.

Finally, aftermarket intakes (well my old one anyway) had an extra hole near the thermastat for ??? whatever but mine had a equus sensor in it for the mechanical type temp gauge. Anybody know if theres an adaptor for the old original electrical sensor to make this work? how bout a Y where the heater plugs in?

I have a bunch of questions about water pump plumbing but that is a different thread I think

thanks again all! and happy Memorial Day btw

I believe that you need a cap for the choke stove so it does not leak exhaust gas.

You should be able to mount an electric (stock) temp sensor and a mechanical one on the aftermarket manifolds with more holes by the thermostat housing. You may need to get a bushing to adapt it to one or the other temp sensors.

Also make sure that there are bosses in the rear of the manifold to mount the coil to, or you will have to relocate it and get a longer coil wire.

If that's a 71' intake, doesn't it have a T/Q flange? And if you use a 650DP
square bore carb i believe your gonna need a spacer/adapter. Just asking.

t/q = Carter Thermoquad??? I'll take pix tonight. I think I have plenty of room for a spacer, but I was kinda looking forward to using a bigger air filter.

I'll take a picture of that 5/16ths hole, that is my main concern.

like a pike, does it look like this?
I'm probably wrong, but it looks like where the tab of a bracket goes like maybe a return spring brkt. or may have been tapped and used for a A/C application or maybe just a hole from the casting procedure?

The 5/16" hole is where the throttle return spring bracket goes. It has a little tab that locates it since it is held only by one intake bolt. The hole is to keep the bracket from rotating.

Thanks SS, at least i was on the right track :)

P.S. I've also experienced those long stroke BOP engines and your exactly right.
