340 oil capacity?

Hey everyone i got a built 69 340 in my 71 demon. I have heard some people say 5 or 6 quarts of oil. Which is it also how do i know if i have a shallow or deep oil pan. I really want to know cause i think ive been putting 6 in it also will over filling it be harmful? Thanks for any thoughts or input

Over filling is bad, just as bad as no having enough. If its a stock pan, it holds 4 quarts.

Are you checking the fluid level when you change the oil?

Yes but the dipstick has a spot on it where someone marked it and it was to that line when i got the engine back from the engine builder so as far as i know im filling it correctly but thats what i want to make sure of

1/2 quart at most

This is my oil pan, it holds 6 quarts plus whatever the oil filter holds.

Four quarts in the STOCK pan, one quart in the filter, for five quarts total.

I cant remember off hand but im putting between 5 and 6 quarts ill have to remember when i change the oil in another month or so

Ok so sounds like five is the right amount should i buy another or different dipstick?

Just buy a replacement stock dipstick and dipstick tube.

There should be something with the new pan telling you the capacity.
