Hey everybody, I'm new here and have a question that maybe someone can help me with (the first of many probably!). I have a '71 Demon 340 4spd car that I've owned for a couple of years now and have been gathering up parts (you know the drill) for it ever since I bought it. I just bought a correct dated 340 for it and with the engine came this distributor. It has a number CHRYSLER 3690200 46 7. I kinda like the old school stuff and am thinking about using this in my car, but first I'd like to know more about it and what ignition module & coil to run with it. Anybody got any ideas?? .......Mike.

the only tach drive distributor that I know of was for the Hemi cars. Are you sure this fits the LA engine (340)?

No, I'm really not sure, is there a quick & easy way to tell?? I don't have a big block distributor handy to compare it too.

Thanks, I guess at least one other person has one!! I sent him an e-mail to see if he has any information on it. Thanks for your help....Mike.

The real problem you may run into is finding a tach that will work with that drive. I'd check to be sure you can get all the correct parts before committing to using that dizzy. Also, most electronic tach's are a bunch easier to install, but old school stuff is fun to tinker with if you have parts and patience.

Cool part! If you like old school, find a Moroso tachometer and bracket, made by Jones Motorola back in the '70's/'80s. There's a bunch on Ebay right now, just type in Moroso tach in the search window. You'll need a cable to hook the tach up to the distributor, hence the 'tach drive'.

I works like any other distributor except it does not have vacuum advance.

Is it electronic or points? Looks like electronic from the reluctor but I'm no expert.

That looks to be a marine application distributor, the housing looks to be cast steel. I run a Direct Connection tach drive dist. in my race car. It has an aluminum housing & looks identical to yours. I have owned mine for 25 years. I don't use a mech. tach anymore though, its easier to just run wires instead of the cable, plus the cable requires maintenace to keep the tach needle steady. Its a good piece.

Cool!! yeah, It's electronic with a steel housing. I'd really like to use it, but have no clue what to use for an ingnition module or coil, or how to wire it for that matter! What kind of module and coil do you use with yours on your race car?

Thanks, I guess at least one other person has one!! I sent him an e-mail to see if he has any information on it. Thanks for your help....Mike.

I got 4 of them....3 of the new aluminums ones and one just like yours...

they are the mechanical race distributor ...full advance around 1200 rpm...

you can use any electronic tach you want since the tach fires off the coil ....

you can use any ignition box you want....mopar orange ..green..black...chrome..blue..gold,..

and msd 6...msd 7...

actually one of the best distributors for small blocks for racing.

no problem, but some might see it as a waste of a racing distributor. You will get better performance out of a Electronic Mopar distributor with Vacumn advance IMO.

used one in my 73 duster for a couple of years...removed it for a vacum advance unit..

still burns alot of gas....with the vacum advance hooked up the car seems to surge...and i have not taken the time to chase that problem..

I'll probably go ahead and run this one in my car, I've got it so why not, If It doesn't work out I can always change it out. I hope to have the car up and running this summer so time will tell!! Thanks again.....Mike.

hi, stewert warner makes a cable drive tach for your dist. I have ran the same dist and tach since 1978 in my 340. very little maintaince required. I have lubed the cable maybe 3-4times in all those years. it runs very steady still today!! you can run mopar elec or msd ignition. I prefer the msd. just food for thought.

bradfields, msd has a fairly new box that takes over control of your ignition. It allows you to lock out the advance and digitally control it.
It is the shiznit and you can hide it under your dash!

Following the introduction of the 6AL-2, there will also be a 21st century version - a laptop programmable 6AL!

This advanced ignition control provides street and performance cars to take advantage of tuning in an ignition curve or boost timing map from a PC. Also, using MSD's Pro-Data+ software will provide simple adjustments to a two step rev limiter, step retard and more!

All new housing, digital circuits and performance
Built-in 2-Step rev control - with rotary dials
Higher output with up to 135mJ and 535 volts
Accepts Hall-effect, points and mag pickup triggers
Managed by an efficient digital controller

Cool, thanks guys!! I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it does, hopefully I'll have it in the car and running in a couple of months, thanks again!!.....Mike.
