Found a pair of 1970 340 X heads. They are bare needing valve train etc....what are they worth? I inspected them and saw that at least one guide has a crack in it and needs replacement but seller says they are good rebuildable core heads ......thanks for you help!!!

If they are greasy, I'd clean them up and have a good machine shop magnaflux them for cracks before buying them. When you have them magnafluxed, at least you know what you are dealing with from the start. The X heads usually don't crack, but I have seen some that were. Just a suggestion.

Depends on what has to be done and what your using them for. With the cost of machine work and the price of Guides , Valves, Springs, retaners , and all hardwear sometimes its cost effective to buy New aluminum heads. If you need them for a numbers restore thats a different story.

All X heads or castings ending with 894 I pulled from original blocks that were that were casted in 67 - 68. These were for 68 - 69 cars. All 70 cars I dismantled Had U or Z casting ending in 915. Alot of guys call these J heads . I believe the spark plug hole surface milling cuts off the U .

I know there were probably early motors in 70 cars. but not many, I myself never saw a X head on a 69 dated block and I had alot of them.

As stated before unless it's for a numbers matching car, need for a period correct racing like that FAST crap, do yourself a favor and get aftermarket heads either w2 Eddys or RHS will do you much flbetter in flow and money spent. Example I spent $200 buck less to have my x heads rebuilt. But if you include the cost to buy the heads it was more like $50. I'd have been better off getting a set of Eddys like I have now (though before I went with the Eddys I kept trying to find a good set of w5 heads but not luck, sure enough 3 months after I got the Eddys a set of w5 with late model casting came up for sell).

Oldmanmopar....Thankyou very much.....yes the heads read 2531894-B
AAWJ 340 and have the "X" underneath the intake runners. Glad I asked....Seller knows I have a 1970 Duster and is working that angle as he stated they are from a '70. He, like myself, must not know the difference or ??.
My car is an original 6 cylinder so I may just wait and weigh my options. I have a complete 360 that I can use and plan on aluminum heads ideally. Thanks to all for the input...much appreciated. Seller is asking more than what has been suggested but they have been cleaned and inspected....just need all the valvetrain etc...these are bare.
