During my overhaul I took my head numbers down 4027596. Then went to our Mopar Head site. It read:

81-83 318 HP (Cast-in 360) 1.88" 1.60" / 66cc 72.5cc

I figured they were straight 360 heads. A'm I right to say that these heads were built for a 318 direct fit so that there would be no loss in compression and milling? Is this a "cool" thing?

Learning more every day.

If you look at the application years the were used on 360's before they were used on the HP318 so I would say they have the 360 chamber size. Could be that the HP318 used a special piston? or Mopar like us realized that just about any casting number head has casting variables. If I remember right there is only supposed to be a 5 or 6cc difference anyway between the 318 and 360 heads. Milling will fix that difference. I have a 318 w/360 heads in a pickup and that thing runs better than my 318 w/318 heads in a van I have. I believe the added flow of the heads makes up for the little lose in compression if there is any.
