So I take it there is no way to identify which heads are on my 360 (from a 1990 truck with a remanufactured engine) without pulling the heads? I looked under the valve cover, didn't see anything that says "j". Just wanted to confirm this, I don't have plans of pulling the heads...

The embossed "J" is by the spark plugs. Look on the drivers side by plug #1.

Other ID numbers can be found under the head in the center. Which would require intake removal. Use a mirror to read them.

Thanks for the tips. The engine is a replacement engine, remanufactured, so I doubt if it has the original heads. Or, would it?

Anything's possible with a reman'd engine. As the others said it should have 308 heads. J heads were last used in 72 or 73 and I believe they quit using the letter system all together by the late 70's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

When you pulled the valve covers did you see any numbers? That may help identify them.

So "27" and "59" were the only numbers I found. These were on the drivers side. (The 59 is shown upside down)

These are the numbers stamped on the front of the head (both sides have these same stampings)

(51906 on the heads), on the block: OK 360 0449 1 713 072835

The 51906 stamped on the heads looks like a rebuilders stamp (rebuilt May 19 2006 would be my guess).

Unfortunately beyond that I'm not much help. All the older heads I'm familiar with had the casting #'s right under the valve covers, along with the mfg date code. Haven't seen 302 or 308 heads so I'm not sure about them. Maybe someone else here can help more

I do plan on removing the intake eventually, so thanks for this tip.

If you do that take an inspection mirror and look at the under side of the intake runners. A lot of times they'll have casting #'s there.

Sorry Mark. I overlooked your quote that said to do this
