My 1967 Barracuda recently had new 373 gears installed in the read end. There is a noticeable whining when driving, especially when driving a constant speed with pressure gently coming on and off the drive train. I can ignore the whining no problem, but am concerned it might lead to failure. The shop that installed the gears is across the country so unable to take the car there for inspection. Is whining normal for new 373 gears and should I just drive for a while to see if the noise goes away? Another option would be to take the car to a local classic car shop (or other?) to have them take a look. Transmission and rear end issues are my weakest areas in terms of auto knowledge.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm assuming it's a Suregrip? If so add a bottle of mopar friction modifier. It MIGHT help. Available at any Dodge store.
**edit**
Ask rebuilder if they put a bottle in? I'm not sure if a SG can overdose on that stuff??

No whining is normal at all with any gear set. None, zero, zilch. You'll see people make reference to "sometimes low gears whine, blah blah blah" that's bull crap. Properly set up gears don't make a sound. Brand doesn't matter. If they make noise, they've been improperly set up. Period, end of story, over and out, Roger wilco. In cases like yours where whine happens on accel or deccel, you can look to the pinion gear depth as the blame. Sometimes....sometimes.....SOMETIMES you get lucky and the pinion nut has backed off and you can retighten it and all will be well, but it's seldom. Since the pinion nut torque can affect gear depth, it's something to check, but don't hold your breath. There is a silver lining of "sorts". IF and I mean IF you catch it quick enough, you can correct the gear depth and the noise will vanish. But, once the gear pattern sets up, it's too late. Nothing you can do will stop it. Good luck. I hope you get it. But don't let any shop run some bull crap by you that "it's normal until the gears break in" or some other total ridiculous nonsense, because that's just a lie basically telling you they don't want to mess with it.

I agree with RRR. There should be no whine on a properly set up gear set.

I'm on my third change of gear sets. 3:23 to 3:91 to 3:55's

No gear whine on either set.
I'm with Rusty Rat Rod on this. The guy doing my setups has 40 years experience.

Never a sound out of the rear end when he's finished.
