440 boat engine vs. car engine?

I believe the main thing, since you will most likely replace the cam/dist/oil pump, will be the crank rear main seal surface will have the knurling the wrong direction.

the crank is also different for the reverse rotation, i learned this the hardway the other year.

I'm building a stroker engine. So.. Let me rephrase, Are the blocks the same? Or would you need aftermarket mains as well?

the blocks are physically the same, I would recommend aftermarket caps, or at least line honing the ones they come with.

Often boat engines have serious rust and corrosion in the water jackets.

some boats run in salt water-corrosion, some run in fresh water-not too bad. I think that the reversed grooves at the rear seal area of a reverse rotation engine are the only difference in the crank-and there are tricks that can get over this

Defintely beware of salt water run marine engines because of the corrosion around the cylinders in the water jackets. If you have to bore it, you might want to get the block sonic tested to make sure the is enough meat in the block.

Since they don't use antifreeze, the rust and corrosion factor is a lot higher. As long as you inspect everything and it looks good, go for it. Since the block is basically all you need, they are the same. Just look at the water jacket areas really closely.

A salt water boat should have a separate system with a heat exchanger, salt water in the cooling system is really bad on the gaskets and the cast iron.

If it helps, might be worth checking out. Some were Fresh Water Cooled which may have used antifreeze and some were Raw Water Cooled which comes directly from the water you're boating in.
Raw Water Owners can flush the engines with or without salt removers / rust inhibitors for winter layup or just drain them and let them rot. I use mine in fresh water only so I flush with tap water, drain and refill with marine antifreeze, drain and leave open to air.
