I got one of the aluminum 440 source housings to put on the 440. I will need to replace the heater core in the car later on down the road when i get more time. On the factory housing i had 2 pipe plus in the heater hose outlet holes. On this aluminum housing, one of the holes is bigger and im having a hard time finding the right pipe plug to screw in it. I found one that is 1/2 but the threads dont go all the way up so the head bottoms out on the housing and just starts digging into the aluminum when tightening it..I need the type that gets tight when there is still thread showing. The smaller hole is fine as its the same smaller size as the original housing and the pipe plug works fine in it.

Find a NPT plug that takes an allen wrench?

Local parts store. If not there, a hardware super store. It is a little bit of an oddity, but, not impossible to find.

So one is 1/2 NPT pipe thread and the other one is 3/4"? Or the one hole isn't tapped correctly? Pics?

The one im having trouble with is 1/2, the other one is smaller and i have a plug for it. Am i correct in thinking these holes use NPT threads? I will get some pics.

I got it straightened out..The brass plug i had didnt have NPT threads, they were regular threads..I found the right plug and it worked right. Thanks guy!

We’re yours plumb? Mine aren’t. One of the inlets is cocked to the side and looks horrible.
Yours too? Yup!! The bigger 1/2 hole that i is was asking about is indeed cocked to one side and does look bad like that..Im sure people will think i cross threaded it in there but its indeed threaded like that..

Which water pump housing did you go with?

Check the internal passages of either AL housings to a cast iron OEM. There was a rash of posts about inefficient pumping through these as one of the cast passages was very restricted. From Duster44D back in 2013,

"...Externally the housing looks fine but the engine supply ports (lower openings) are very restrictive. You're kidding right....how can this be ? Nope...they are poorly designed and you'll see it yourself once you pull the pump housing and stick your fingers down the hole.

So, over the w/e i pulled the rad and all the front acessories off the engine to have a peek...sure enough the lower (supply) ports were very small. I compared this to the stock housing and it was like night and day ! On the stock housing i could easily get 2 or more fingers all the way into the hole but on the Source housing i could only get one finger in maybe an inch and it was jammed....WTH !!!..."

Mine was a 440 pass side. I saw all the warnings about them being inferior as far as flow goes, I never had a problem with that, as they said they fixed the flow issue by then, but I must say, there is a smaller flow area

Mine is also a passenger side. I took a dremel to mine and opened the ports up as good as I could and going to give it a shot.. As far as a thermostat, I got a regular old murray from oreilly. Is that ok to use? Does it need any mods done to it at all?

I have the pass side Source housing on my 470 stroker. Block is half filled. Using a factory 2 core rad, no shroud. Factory de clutching fan. Never a problem. Kim

I naturally went w/ a drivers side , just because my two hemi`s came from the factory that way. Worked for them . ------- past tense !

Do you have a picture of this, before and after?
TIA
