I would like to switch from a single spring to dual throttle return springs (inside each other) for safety reasons. The single spring has always been attached on the notched bar as seen in the photo “current”. Can I attach the two springs in the “proposed” position where the throttle cable attaches? The other photos show the contracted and stretched lengths. Any suggestions on springs that will fit with the correct tension? I looked at many, hard to judge.

Use something like this, available at most parts houses.

I would go to my local parts store & check them out, I was just giving you an example.

The factory put the spring in your proposed location, your current location was for the kick-down linkage and spring.

Your "Proposed" location puts less strain on the carb body where the throttle shaft goes through the main body.
