Do any of you guys run a straight short stick shifter? Or do most of you guys run a curved shirter? Is the shifter location too far forward to run a short stick? Would a B body trans place the shifter in a better location?

I ran a MR GASKET short stick shifter in my '64. I'm gonna guess the handle was about 8" tall. (I've still got it. When it warms up a bit I could measure it) It mounted high, so that the top edge of the shifter body was actually sticking partway through the factory hole in the floor. It was a bit of a reach to 1st & 3rd. Also, I had to remove the face plate of my Mopar under-dash AC unit because the shifter hit it in those two gears. Finally removed the AC unit all together.
 
Had a 69 Dart with factory bench seat...used the short stick with a SuperShifter box.Everything cleared...handle came to just the top of the seat.Was easier with the longer,straight handle...10-12" I believe.You could get a little more umph behind it.Bob
 
THanks. The short stick just looks so much more bad ***. My buddies 68 camaro has the same stick and its in a good location to bang gears. I dont have my trany in yet but it looks like the shifter location is a little more foward than his camaro's.
 
does the shorter stick give you shorter throws? (someone told me that short shifts have to do with the length of where the shifter attachs to the actual linkage and stuff)
 
This is the setup in my 65 Wagon. Is there any way to change the stick? It is a 69 Hurst and the handle does not have the bolts on it. It is too far forward, and hits the ashtray in first. It is too far forward and hits the dash in 1st.
 
It gets to close to the dash for me. Bashing your knuckles on the dash is no fun. To much of a reach in 4th too. So I put a bent stick on there. I think the bent back sticks look the best. But thats just me.

I think that is what I want to do. The stick in mine is pressed in I think. (I need to find my camera so I can start posting pics) Is there any way to get it out if it does not have the bolts on the side?
 
A B-body trans would put the shifter to far forward. Probably right under the dash. No a short handle does not make shorter throws...moving the rod attachment holes on the shifter linkage closer to the side cover boss stud holes will.
Short shift handles were all the rage in the '70s. I thought they looked awkward and a little ridiculous then... and still do.
 
I have a B body pistol grip in my Dart, like the one in the post above. The pistol grip is slightly above my bench seat. For shorter throws on the shifter, the 72 - 74 E body had two sets of holes on the levers that attach to the trans. I had a 73 Challenger with these holes. I always thought someone drilled them til I read that they were for making a shorter throw when shifting. If anyone here has those ears, maybe they could post them with a measurement from one hole to the other.
 
I love the shorter shifter, and it is in the perfect position, very comfortable.
It barely touches the seat, if at all.

I can't give you the exact measurement, but I can tell you the part numbers for the leverrs. #3515058, and #3515057. They look to be 3/4 of an inch, but the nuts are making it impossible to tell. Hurst used to sell special levers for the Muncie that had the shorter throw closer holes to replace the stock levers. They didn't have this for New Process.
 
I used a E body pistol grip. It looks great and works great too. I need to lean a little foward to shift but I also have the seat all the back.

I had one in my Challenger that was about 8 inches high. It may have been the Super Shifter as BigSlim pictured earlier. That was the best shifting car, I could bang gears in that car like no other. In A-bodies a straight shifter never seems to be oriented correctly to be that ergonomic.
 
A shorter handle wil make it seem like a shorter throw,,the longer ARM/HANDLE travels father then the short stick,,,here is a striaght stick in an early A with a gear grab pistol grip style handle

I know this is an older thread but I can't let this piece of mis-information stay here for future readers.

A short lever WILL most definitely make for a shorter throw. It will increase the amount of force you need to use, but your hand will move a shorter distance.

BTW, I loved banging through the gears in my Duster with a Hurst Super Shifter!!

This is correct, a shorter shifter does decrease the travel which gives you a shorter throw, but does increase the pressure needed to shift. Different leavers will also shorten the throws but doesn't increase the pressure needed to shift as much as the shifter will.

I run a 8" Hurst shifter with a bend just above the mounting holes that curves the shifter back, no issues with 1st and 3rd like you have with a straight shifter.

Hurst, I do not recall which, (Comp Plus I think), but I can check and get the numbers.
My understanding is the original owner bought it and it is discontinued.
The car is in storage and it is about 10 below right now- is there anyway to mark these threads in order to follow up?
