The Current issue (says display until 2/28/12) of Car Crafts 'Engine Swaps' has a pretty decent write up on swapping a 5.7 Hemi into a '69 Dart. 8 whole pages, lol. Includes a price list and some dyno numbers along with a step by step to installing an '08 5.7 out of a Charger with a carb.

Interresting read.

It is always welcome to have new Hemi swap info in print. Very good thing.

However, I am miffed at how the engine they used made so little power on the dyno considering all the hardware it used.

'08 5.7:
Arrington Cam: 223/234 duration@ .050, .595/.589 lift, 114LSA
cnc ported heads with new valves
Mopar single plane intake
unknown CFM Eddy carb that was "dialed in for our 5.7."
TTI Headers

all this only adds up to 437 hp and 371 lb-ft's of torque according to Arringtons dyno. Sounds lacking to me. From what I have seen over the years, this combo should be making near those numbers at the rear wheels, not at the flywheel. With CNC'd heads near 500 hp and 415 lb-ft tq seems more inline with what I have seen.

The XV combo with nearly the same intake makes 438hp with only a cam, intake and headers...

What do you think?

Other than that, its a decent article aside from the typical magazine hype. :D

Carbs suck, IMO. Horespower TV rebuilt a stock 5.7 the only change was a Fast EFi and it made 400 hp.

The Horsepower episode also had an Indy intake and headers with no front accessories running. I've seen numbers all over the board though. I never really know what to believe. One person said they had just an intake, cam, headers, and performance carb and had a chassis dyno sheet for 340 rear wheel. That sounds like a pretty big gain to me for just a cam, intake, and headers. One other thing I often forget is that the factory numbers are rated "as installed in the vehicle", so running through stock exhaust with accessories, though I don't know what sort of draw the accessories are running.

I'm with tincup. Carbs suck. They are a giant restriction on the intake. Put a 1000 CFM throttle body on that motor and add port injection and that would be a 500HP motor.

Back when the Hemi's first came out Hot Rod got 481 HP (At the flywheel) out of a stock 5.7 Hemi with a Comp Cams XFI 273, TTI Headers, and a tune.

If you don't make 500 HP with a Hemi you're just not trying very hard.
