The "White Whale," 97 Ram 1500, 5.9, 2WD, suddently started idling quite high. I pinched the booster and pcv hoses, to no effect. It's not burning oil, but I'm thinking "it probably" is the bottom plate on the intake?

I haven't done anything, EG that should affect the mechanical throttle linkage

Is it throwing a code? TPS sensor possibly?

I don't believe the engine light is on, but maybe the damn thing doesn't work LOL. I did recently buy a scanner for the Ford Ranger, I'll have to see if it will work. I'll have to check that out.

If the plenum plate is leaking you can open the butterflies and look inside the the intake with a flashlight, if there is oil pooled in the bottom toward rear of the motor it is definitely bad. I got the Hughes plenum plate kit and it is fixed for good (not a small job). But... after all that and cleaning the intake and throttle body I still have the 1000 rpm high idle problem myself. Will chirp the tires in the garage putting it in gear. :dontknow:

If the IACV is acting up, nine times out of ten it will not set a code. Cleaning it is the first thing I would try. They usually don't fail. They get dirty and hang up.

Thanks you guys, that gives me some "meat" for the next few days.

By the way, I've driven the thing out to Post Falls and back a couple of times, about 20 miles round trip I guess, and the trans leak seems to be "fixed." I had been watching under it "in the snow" and never saw any fluid. Evidently it "took a little time" for the foaming etc to stabilize

It can compensate for a pretty big vacuum leak.... Check the big vacuum lines. Normally it's pinging and oil use that will be the signs of the intake.

There are only two big vacuum lines, the booster on one side, and the PCV on the other. The other hoses are little ones, for the heater / AC, etc. I have pinched off, removed the hoses, and plugged the holes.

"Something occurs." LMAO. I'll check the TB and make sure it's tight!!!!

Don't eat the pink snow.

That's "yellow snow" Rob. LMAO

Check if the engine is pulling a code. If it's idling high like that and if it fluctuates frequently, it could possibly be an ignition module.

People seem to blame the IAC when a vehicle idles high but its almost never an IAC. The IAC has control over the idle but, many other things will cause a low or high idle, the IAC just tries to hide it. It can be a CTS , TPS, Cam position sensor, etc. Check small rubber elbow between MAP and TB. They crack all the time and will cause vac leak. Most of the time, belly pan gasket leak wont change iddle, it just creates a huge bog due to leaking as air in crankcase is un metered. Get a scanner and look at the live data. Check for fuel cut numbers. If numbers are low then you have an overly rich condition and the IAC is just trying to keep the engine form dieing. If numbers are high, probably a belly pan leak and the computers trying to richen mix to make up for lean condition of un metered air entering system. unless you want to just throw a bunch of parts at it, look at the data, this is the real indicator of whats going on with PCM.

Doesn't cost anything but time to clean the IACV

You guys have given some great ideas. I was pretty tired and sore today, and didn't touch the thing. Plus it rained like 'ell for awhile this aft.

I have an 01 Durango 4WD and the 5.9 that sometimes exhibits the symptoms that you describe. Normally a quick blip of the throttle got it back down to the normal idle RPM. I always ended up replacing the TPS and it cured the problem. My dad has an 03 Durango with the 4.7 and he also has the same problem with the TPS. It has been an item that has been needing to be replaced every 60,000 miles or so.

I had an IACV go bad and the screw drive was stripped. No codes, very high idle. Just another idea.

UPDATE. The "White Whale" rides again!!.

I finally got the 4 stroke trike project beat into submission............

So I resolved to get the Whale fixed today

COLD into the mid 20's last night. After if FINALLY warmed up this morning---and goin' to be a NICE day-- I got out and pulled the TB off. The IAC didn't look very gummed up and seemed to be free. Pulled the one off the Jeep engine I just bought and no change. Pulled the --correction-- TPS off and THAT did the trick.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Don't know why it didn't generate a code!!
