.509 Purple cam in my want to buy 1971 Scamp

.509 Purple cam duration 292 in a streetable car...1971 Plymouth Scamp

I am about to buy a really nice 1971 Plmouth Scamp....it has a 340 with "X" heads..hooker headers that dump into 2 1/2" exhaust and dumps into 40 series flowmaster mufflers...the cam is that dreaded .509 purple cam with 292 duration...any ideas on how streetable this car will be...it has 3.55 suregrip 8 3/4" rear with some MT street radials...front disc brakes and he added line lock....

To answer your question, the gear ratio is a bit numericaly low for the cam. You also didn't mention the stall converters rating, so, while it could be a very doable combo, I myself would go 1 of 2 ways for a better runner. This would be ethier;

1. get a new gear ratio, 3.91's min. Tire size plays a roll in this.

2. (With the gear ratio staying at 3.55's.) Change out the cam for something more street freindly, drop the duration down some. A nice split pattern cam from Comp Cams, Hughes engines or Lunati.

Sweet lookin ride dude! I bet that things has long legs on the top end.
 
What's the compression ratio? It needs a bit of squeeze for the 508 to work it's best. I'd reccomend 3.91's as well.

I'd want a minimum of 3500 stall behind it.

Already thinking of comp cams hydraulic roller...230/236 534/538 lift..had it before in my previous 340

292/508 MP cam will be a dog on low end torque and with 3.55's. A 4-spd tranny is really best with the 508 cam and 3.91/4.10 gears.

Beautiful car but swap the cam to something more streetable like a Comp Cam 274 or 280H or a Lunati Voodoo cam.
 
I would switch to a smaller cam like the MP 268/272 or the comp XE268, both have worked well for me in small block A bodys with street gears. If it has a decent converter already the MP 280/.474 will run good in it.
 
Okay I went to a real nice guys house....huge....huge 4 stall 2 car deep garage....now the delema....too many cars to choose from....some won't like the choice I made but I did not buy the Scamp....too many little things wrong with it...had a great all new interior and strong engine and drivetrain...the .509 cam was a dog until you got up to 3000 rpm then it roared to life....paint job had some issues...rust bubble around rear window and top trim....lower rusty corner on the drivers door...and worst of all the master cylinder was leaking and ate up the paint underneath it...will post picks of the choice I made later on...Thanks Eric
