I tried starting my dart (straight 6) the other day and it idled for a bit but then died on me. It took a couple tries to get it going again. Once I’m driving it seems okay but the idle seems slow and is what causes the car to die. I’m hoping anyone has any advice to share.

Possibly ignition but not likely. It sounds more like a carb/choke/ adjustment issue.

Could be either, both, or other things. Have you / do you know how to perform a tuneup? What do you have for tools / instrumentation? If this is a breaker points (original) ignition, you really should get a dwell meter, unless you are planning on ditching the system for an electronic conversion, or are planning an engine swap

1...Check compression and or leakdown test and if never been done, check/ set valve lash
2....Examine condition of points, examine cap and rotor, test plug wires, and examine or replace plugs
3....Replace points if necessary, and condenser, and reset point gap AKA dwell
4....Set ignition timing
5...Warm engine completely and set idle speed and mixture

That is the short version. Check air filter condition, condition of fuel and vacuum hoses, carb bolts (they can loosen) and choke operation. Check for gummy/ rusty/ stuck carb linkage, choke pull off etc etc.

IF YOU do not have one, run over to MyMopar.com and download the closest year factory service manual. You may have to settle for Plymouth vs Dodge etc

Maybe idle it up a little bit?
I do. I also rev the engine up a little bit to give it initial power so that it does not die. It seems to help a little but not by much. I was initially thinking it being a carb/choke adjustment issue.

Have you checked the tuneup on it? It may simply need to be tuned up. These old girls don't require much.

Looks like you have a later intake/carb setup. How about a photo with the air cleaner off and a close up of the carb/choke/intake.

This is after taking it for a spin around the block (it stalled out on me twice while driving)

Looks like you don't have a choke at all, so, it probably won't run too good until it fully warms up. I'd do something with the open bowl vent too to keep dirt from going inside. I'm not sure if I'd cap it but, maybe a piece of sponge? I'd also get a proper gasket for the air horn so the air cleaner isn't sitting metal to metal on the carb. After it fully warms up, won't it adjust to where it will idle correctly? IIRC, your carb looks like the V8 version instead of the 6cyl, but, it's hard to tell for sure with the photos you have. The choke connection is slightly different between the 6 and 8, and I'm sure the jetting will be too. I think I actually have a factory choke for that setup. I'd have to check though....

I just noticed something...Is that EGR valve connected to a vacuum source on the carb base? If so, yeah, it's not going to idle or run right at all. disconnect that thing and cap the vacuum nipple!
