Can anyone tell me if the color of the steering column and wheel is supposed to be the same as the dash and upper door? Mine has been painted by a previous owner and needs to be re-done but I've never seen another Dart (that I can remember) with the same interior colors as mine to use as a reference. Also, is there a special type of paint for the steering wheel? Or should I match it the best I can with an automotive spray paint and clear coat the crap out of it?? Thanks for your input!

Both red interior '64 Darts I've owned had red wheels and columns, and my fawn interior '64 has a fawn wheel and column.

All early Barracudas I've seen had the steering column the same color as the other interior sheet metal. Also, I believe lacquer is normally used for painting steering wheels.

Not only is the column the same color as the interior, but I believe to be correct you paint the section of the steering column that is visible in the engine bay the same. It is my understanding that the whole column was painted prior to assembly. Not sure on the type paint for the wheel, mine has the three chrome spoke woodgrain wheel. Someone on here will know.

Bamcuda is correct, that is how min ewas before I went to satin black. But I am doing the entire inside in Black to match.

The entire column was painted gloss. The shaft was natural steel. One of mine had the word "auto" written in yellow paint on the underside of the column, (original 32,000 mile car).
The dash was the same color only flat.
Year One sells the correct interior paint by year including Saddle Bronze, and Citron Gold.

Column & Wheel are the same as the dash and door tops. I swapped out a wood grant wheel, and painted the rim to match my interior. I scuffed the clear on the wood, used adhesion promoter, then base/cleared the wheel.
A note about the dash top.... my 64 had a two toned top, bermuda aqua met, which wrapped up to the accent line, then a flat almost olive drab green/aqua on top to the windshield.. Guess an early form of "non-glare" on the dash.
Most 63 darts I've seen have that section semi/flat black...

Thanks for the help guys, I'll get at it this weekend...I also found a car on Hemmings that has very detailed pictures of an "Anniversary Gold" interior that I can use as a reference. I'm so glad that I stumbled across this site...very informative and entertaining!!
