Just picked up a 1964 Valiant that had a 360 installed in it. About 10 miles into the ride back from the shop, after the motor and transmission was installed, the engine caught on fire (That's what I was told). Wiring was all burned up. My question is, do I need to be looking at a replacement wiring harness for the car, which originally came with a slant 6, or for the engine, a 360 which came out of a Dart? I guess to simplify, is the wiring harness matched to the car or to the engine?

Both. It needs to be compatible with a '64 Valiant, and a V8.
Like Rusty said, one for a 273 will work fine.
Some vendors can modify their harnesses- for instance, if your 360 has electronic ignition, or later model alternator and electronic voltage regulator.
But first, figure out why the harness/engine burned up...

I sure wish I could tell why it burned up. The carburetor is gone too so I'm thinking it had something to do with that. I figured we'll start with the wiring harness and go from there. I tried reaching out to the owner who had the car when it caught on fire, hopefully he knows. Thanks for the advice!!! Can you tell I'm excited to start on this project?

i'm pretty sure classic industries has complete front harnesses-- engine & lights-- that are modified for electronic ignition. they're about $300
