I recently bought my first A body, a 1965 Barracuda Formula S. I have extensive information and knowledge concerning 66-67 Chargers, but lack the same in A body cars.
My question is: When did Plymouth introduce the Formula S package to the public for the 65 Barracuda? My car has a build date of 12/11/64 and I have never seen an earlier build date on the Formula S car. Some information I have says it wasn't offer until the fall of 64...ie around October.
If someone knows, I would surely appreciate the information.
Thanks, Pat

Welcome to the site, lot's of great early "A" body knowledge here! Not sure on the exact date for the Formula "S" package but I would imagine late 1964 would be correct. You should post some pictures! Here is my dad's 1966 Formula "S", owned it since 1976!

Hi Pat!

I parted out a Formula S, silver w/black stripe a couple of years ago and that car was produced in October 1964. The Formula S cars were produced from early August since they were introduced September 24, 1964.

But there were getting more and more popular so in 65 the sale increased alot.

Do you have a picture of the car? I'm into 1965 Dartchargers.

Thank you for the information...most helpful.

Yes, I have some pictures....but, I must ease and prepare any purist 65 Barracuda fan into the what the images show. The images will cause most to wince. It is one neat, neat car, but it looks like death warmed over.
A 4 speed, factory A/C Formula S car in Barracuda Silver....from out west and relatively rust free.

Somehow, it has managed to retain the original engine, transmission, rear end, radiator, carb and distributor.

What really makes it look bad is the god awful flaking repaint in blue or green...not sure which color. It needs a complete restoration, no doubt about that, but it is a running and driving car.

Sooooooooo....here it is.

1/2 a saturday and a few rattle cans of primer and that car would be ready for some cruisin. thats sweet. when i bought my 66 it was sitting in a pasture next to a 65. somedays i wish id have bought the 65, i almost like them better.

None....everything is original including the 7 1/4" rear.

Looks like the car didn't get the factory re-call on the 7 1/4 rear. That happened in mid 66 when Ma Mopar was getting a rash of warrenty rear end repairs on Hipo 273 4 speed cars with the 7 1/4. They found it was cheaper to replace it with the 8.75. Hipo cars didn't come standard with the 8.75 until mid 66. Before that it was an option that had to be ordered. Same with disk brakes. Just a bit of early A body trivia.

man, i love the rust patina on it! as was stated, sure would make one hell of a sleeper! give the ricer and mustang boys something to think about. sweet!

1964 was the first year for the 273,and the first year for a v8 in an A body.
all 64 v 8 cars were 2bbl carb,,no 4 bbls in 64 ,,,altho you could get a 4 speed 273 2bbl or slant 6 in 1964, 1965 is the first year of the hipo 273 formula S or comando 273,, so if they carry a build date of late 64 it would be for 1965 model year,,, and i live those 64s with the push button,,,wish i stil had mine,,,,, paint that 65 S car ,,man GREAT FIND,,, keep in mind when restoring that 65 barracuda S car,,, the fender emblems,,S are differnt in 1965,, then the S emblems of 1966 to 1969,,,the 65 S emblem has a curvature tio the fender, and the mounting studs are different,65 mounting pins are left to right,,, 66-69 are top to bottom,,,try to save those,,impossible to find and not being reproduced,, not many people know this little fact,, i had a 65 S emblem once upon a time i was going to make a belt buckel out of it,, but sold it to some one that needed it,,,,
