Does anyone make the black plastic piece that forms around the backside of the tail light and is it necessary? Looked at trying to salvage a couple from some spares and realize I would have to grind off the inserts holding them in.

Any advice is appreciated.

They keep the bezel from rubbing on the body, without them your paint will get scratches,it will also let water run into the trunk floor and fenders.

Nope, he means the plastic liner/gasket that mounts inside the bezel (64-66), you can grind the pegs or holders off and change them, sometimes you can carefully pop them off too. Usually they get very brittle and crumble and break to pieces.

66340 is right, it's the back liner gasket. Guess I'll end up getting the dremel tool out at some point and try grinding the pegs away. You're right about the brittleness and I can see they won't clean up very easily without flaking apart.
