Will a 68 automatic trans bolt up to a 64 225 slant 6? What torque converter to use?
Nope. The early converter will fit the engine, but will not work in the late trans.I believe the crankshaft register is smaller on 67 and older 225s so you will have to use the early converter to fit into it.
As stated. The trans will bolt up to the engine, but the converter is a mismatch. The trans will not be a "bolt in" into a 65 or older "A" body. Different shifter, speedometer cable connection, different driveshaft hookup. The earlier trans will likely be cable shift, the 68 trans will not. You didn't mention what car/year it was going into.
jus sayin....
Hey there, looks like You haven't posted for awhile, welcome back! As above, '68 trans first year for larger converter hub/input shaft/drum/frt. Pump/hub assy. That's a beauty of a '65 Formula S Ya' got there! Will a 68 automatic trans bolt up to a 64 225 slant 6? What torque converter to use?
cant squeeze a "too big" converter snout to fit a "too small" crank pilot. can't go late trans to early crank. (I did prove that out the "hard way" back when I had my 80 Aspen... had gotten a free '63 225 and went to put it in in front of the 80 trans and no go....I put a 72 Dart drivetrain in my 65 Barracuda. I shortened the driveshaft about 3 inches since the Dart was a longer wheelbase. I also changed oil pans and installed a B&M shifter that fit in the console. If you want to stick with the original trans one of the trans vendors makes a bushing to fit the early convertor to the later crank.
Uhmm, You're bassackwards from what the OP is attempting, They're going early crank to late trans.I put a 72 Dart drivetrain in my 65 Barracuda. You're all over the place.Wont work, easiest way is to get a 68 and up slant six.
Or you if you have another 68 and up (pre Cast crank) you can swap it into your motor to mate them together, its some work but yeah.
Then you can run a B and M shifter or any universal floor mount shifter eliminate the Ball and trunion drive shaft at the same time.
and we dont know for sure the engine is a '64 even if the car it's in, is.You're all over the place.
1) We don't know what car the OP is working on.
2) We don't know for sure if this is a proposed engine swap, or trans swap.
3) IF it's engine, the crank can be machined to the larger hub dia., or as You stated...swapped.crank or engine.
4) IF it's trans, then You'd have to do one of the above AND change shift mechanisms, driveshaft, put extra holes in the floor. Why?
5) Who wants a cool PB auto car with a Starshifter on the floor? Unless You're actually racing it....
6) Charrlie_S had a guy building later converters w/the small hub, but I believe that source stopped.
7) The OP hasn't chimed in since the original post, so We're puking speculative suggestions at this point.......the original question was answered,......NO.
Best comment, especially since many replies suggest installing a 1968+ engine, perhaps an earlier owner already did that.and we dont know for sure the engine is a '64 even if the car it's in, is.
true lolYou're all over the place.
