Here is the 68 Valiant i picked up from Saabfan a few weeks back. Im not doing a restoration on this car, i figured i would just freshen up the mechanicals and have a fun street car. Plans are for a B block stroker with a manual valve body auto. So far i have replaced the brake lines, fuel lines with 3/8", fuel tank, installed an 8 3/4 with 4.10's,(stuck waiting for backing plates) caltracs, offset shackles,frame connectors. This weekend i got the front end ready for Wilwood disc's, manual steering box, and removed the power brakes.

Nice Project.

What's up with the leaf springs ? It looks like its two pieces over lapped at the axel. What's the logic behind it ?
 
Those are Caltrac mono leafs, the idea is that you can adjust/ replace leaf segments for heavier or lighter cars, and also adjust siffness for different power levels.
 
Spent this weekend stripping the front end, getting ready to shoot some paint under the hood. Its a real mess getting rid of the rattle can black. Got the bumpers ready to ship out for chrome, shipped out the wiper motor and dash speedo bezel for rebuild, rebuilt the heater box. ive got all new wiring ready, along with under dash insulation. Ill be able to finish up the 8 3/4 when the backing plates show.

Wow! Looking great man. Engine bay is going to look great when you get it sprayed. Wilwood's are going to make that car stop on a dime and look great. Planning on swapping a set of there front brakes on my car soon. Keep up the good work.
 
finished up the rear brakes and axles and moved on to the trunk. Ive spent two full days stripping the black paint, what a pain. Ive rebuilt a manual steering box with a fast ratio steering sector, painted the LCA's and K-member. It doesnt look mutch different but ive done a lot of detail work. Pulled out the back seat and found the build sheet which is a bonus. Also ive ordered the tires, 275/60's and 26'' moroso front runners, ill be ordering 10'' steelies in the morning. I guess the most exciting is the motor. ive contacted pete at best machine and have a 4.25 stroke 383 in process, he tells me it will be around 489 CI with edelbrock heads, comp custom hydraulic cam and victor manifold.

Very nice looking ride! What did you use to strip the rattle can black? I have a car I recently purchased with the same chevy treatment......:cussing:
 
so far ive used enamal reducer on the thinly painted easy parts and zip strip paint stripper on the hard stuff. i didnt want to use the zip strip cause its a mess to wipe up, but after thirty minutes of breathing enamal reducer you have switch to sober up. also used scotch bright pads, but they plug up fast so i switched to course steel wool. Its a mess, but im about ready to prime and shoot it back white. If you see a mopar guy wanting to paint the engine bay and trunk black, kick him in the balls!:axe:

thanks, the shop is not mine, it belongs to a friend. without him my hobby wouldnt be this much fun. A little rent and ive got the use of his heat, tools, car lift, and ive got my other two cars on his four post lift. i try and clean up and not leave any tracks when im done.

Sounds like "White Lightning" would be appropriate to name it...it ought to scream with the driveline you have planned.

I've got a white 69, the original idea was to make a sort of "sleeper" out of it, now I'm not so sure... no street action around here, and kids don't know what it is anyway.

I'm trying to make up my mind about a possible color change.. any convincing arguments for or against?

Yes, im going to leave it white, and replace the black vinyl top. The older i get the more attached i get to origional colors, no matter how ugly! I may go with a fiberglass hood, but ill wait until the motor is in and the victor manifold is on. I also want to run the dog dish hubcaps so I ordered steel wheels today. 4'' for the front and 8'' for the rear. the tires are 275/60 and 26'' moroso front runners. This started out as a "street" car but that flew out the window pretty fast.
