Hi, I wanted to know about parts and replacing the axle shaft seals on a 7 1/4 rear. I seem to have gear oil leaking down the metal cover (held in place with 4 nuts) at the backing plate. Is there a seal in there at the outside end of the axle tube and where would you suggest purchasing these seals/parts. Any help would be appriaciated.

While its out have a machine shop press on a new bearing.
I am sure it will have to come of anyway..

Be careful and use a good safe jack stand location.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate your help. Do you know where the best place to fine these illusive seals & bearings? I've searched the net, and can find these parts for everything but a 7 1/4 rear.

I just did the same job you are doing about 2 months ago, I got all the stuff a the local Napa, ofcourse they had to order it, head it all the next morning though. should be any problem at a good Napa store.

I know this is a stretch, but you wouldn't happen to have the NAPA part numbers for the bearings & seals , sometimes these guys are idiots, and if I can come in and say "I need two of these and two of these" it would make life a lot easier.

I will call the best of the best at my Napa store here in town and get the bearings and seal part numbers for you when they open tomorrow.

I went to the auto zone store here in town to pick up a set of plug wires.
66 valiant170/6 and he said " Yes we have them" I opened the box at the store and showed him that they are not for a 66. yep you have to be careful
who you ask and do business, Napa has always been a good parts store.
But it is a good counterman that knows his parts.

So if you ask why I stopped at the zone !! It is on my side of town and I was needing some antifreeze. it kept me from driving in to the city:cheers:

Tell me what car this is for, year and model , Is it for your 68 barracuda?

I don't know the exact part numbers for the seals but I had to get them for my wifes 72 dart last month and those seals are outragous at napa they were around 20 bucks each I think i ended up finding them for 16 bucks each but still that was crazy. The later 7.25 with the big bolt pattern uses a different seal (it happens to be the same as the 8.25) and its only 5 bucks each. Sorry just ranting but I figured i'd let you know about the prices. Good Luck Justin

The diagram above looks close but has C-clips to hold axles in.
The 7.25 in my Swinger didn't have those, my axles were held in only by the 4 bolts at the brake backing plate. Also mine had the seal inside and the bearing to the outside. The bearing is a pregreased sealed unit and the oil seal is used to hold the axle grease away from that bearing. No seal outside the bearing.

Thanks for your help, yes, this is for my '68 Cuda with the 7.25 sbp (no C-clips) rear. I completly agree as to the counterperson, I had to replace two rear wheel cyl, and after I got them home, they were wrong, so I agree about their knoweldge, the good ones are a reear breed these days. Let me know how you make out.

Napa parts # for the seal is 13418.
# for the bearing is rwf34r.

You ROCK!!! Thanks for the info and help. I ordered everything today and should have the parts tomorrow. I was going to pull the cover and clean everything out, (it's been sitting for over two years) and refill with new gear oil and posi fluid (3.55 posi), is there anything special I should do while I'm in there, or just brake clean everything, and button it back up. Also, what do I use to get the huge star plug out to re-fill once it's back together. Thanks again for all your help.

If this is a 7 1/4 you will have to rent or find a slide hammer to get the axles out, and finding one for the 4' bolt pattern is a challange. I had to use a large washer over the top of the part that bolts onto the axle to use one from autozone. Nobody had one to fit the 4" pattern.
