Hi all. I am just beginning a restoration project on a 72 Duster. Currently, the car has no rear axle at all. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for which axle I should be looking for, bearing in mind that I would like to eventually have a hopped up small block sitting up front. I have found valiant and dart axles at salvage yards in the area, but I'm concerned they might be too light.

This should help. Best for street driven mopar with small bolt pattern is the 8 3/4... you can get axles for it too in case you want large bolt pattern. Next is 8 1/4 found in 73 up A-bodies.

If you dont have wheels yet the early b body 8.75s are much cheaper than a body rears. you just move the perches in half inch each side and use wheels with more offset.

Welcome to FABO! I agree with rob robinson87.....8 3/4 would be my first choice (either bolt pattern) and 8 1/4 would be second choice if you're swapping to the big bolt pattern wheels. This is assuming you want to just bolt one in without having to make it fit. If you can't find an A-body rear, do what daredevil suggests on a B-body rear or get a C-body (or other vehicle) and have it narrowed and good axles made for it.
