Four pin ecu is fine, need to check for power at ignition coil. Somewhere in this forum is a troubleshooting guide, with an ohmmeter and a test light you can find exactly what part is faulty. Price of the tools is cheaper than replacing parts willy-nilly.btw,ignition rarely causes a sputter, but a fuel problem does.

Pull dist cap and see how much up/down movement it has.

Also check that stupid 2 pin connector where the distributor connects, as I have had two cars that had issues because of that plug.
Squeeze the female socket on each end of that plug to make sure they connect.

It does sound like a lack of fuel though.
Does it shoot fuel into the carb when the throttle is pumped?
Is there a spark to ground out of the distributor end of the coil wire?
Or if you put a timing light on the coil wire and crank it does the light flash about every 1/2 second?

Answer these and you'll find your problem.

The distributor center shaft under the rotor is what he means. (how much up and down play)
Factory distributors are a two piece design, so this could be misleading as some of the play will be the top section moving.
