The case will be different, and there may be some internal differences especilally with valve body. The 78 may or may not be a lockup, probobly not but you never know. Lockup trans have different valve bodies and the input shaft is different as well as other differences. Drums, clutches, bands etc should interchange.
Are there broken parts in the big block trans? If all it needs is a rebuild, I would just buy a kit with clutches & bands and just rebuild what you have. If you teardown one to install parts in another, you will at the very least need a seal kit.
